Happy Registered Dietitian Nutritionist Day—a day late:)

Becoming a Registered Dietitian is no small feat. It requires years of rigorous education in subjects like biochemistry, physiology, medical nutrition therapy, metabolism, and food science, followed by a a Masters Degree and supervised dietetic internship, passing a national board exam, and committing to ongoing continuing education to stay current with evolving science.
Dietitians are uniquely trained to translate complex nutrition science into practical, compassionate care for people across all stages of life and health conditions. From hospitals and clinics to schools, community programs, sports performance, and eating disorder treatment, RDs bring evidence-based nutrition to the table every single day.
After 31 years as a dietitian and as a Certified Eating Disorder Specialist, I still genuinely love the work I get to do. One of the most meaningful parts of my career has been mentoring and serving as a preceptor for dietetic interns, helping guide the next generation of dietitians as they enter this field and to be able to share my passion for weight inclusive care. I also love that I am able to be a nutrition counselor as well as continue to teach. Today I was over in Kinesiology teaching how to cultivate a better relationship with food and body.
But the very best part of my job is walking alongside individuals as they work toward a healthier relationship with food and their bodies. That work is deeply meaningful, and it’s a privilege to be trusted with it.
Here’s to the dietitians making a difference every day through science, compassion, and care.

Many have asked for access to my educational content! I have finally linked it in my profile Dietitian Lecture Series. https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLUTU3h7KJAckGGSGvEixABdtwm4Clyh1g&si=Gw0evOtx5YJQ7eOl
The content was specifically created for Providers at ISU Thielen Healthcare. Framework is all around medical nutrition therapy without the focus on a person’s weight and restrictive diets. Videos are approximately 10-20 minutes and links provided in the text box for further learning. Two of the videos on this channel are longer—45 min (Hyperlipidema and Diabetes) the target here are students who have these conditions.

I am always adding more! Next on my list is condensed versions of Diabetes and Hyperlipids for the Providers!

Hyperlipidemia Class today lead by ISUs MPP-D (Master of Professional Practice in Dietetics) intern Frances! I absolutely love being a preceptor for students! To be able to mentor them in a weight inclusive anti- diet perspective with an eating disorder lens is so exciting and fulfilling! Double exciting is Frances is in the program I help build! I worked as a professor in the dietetic internship for 10 years and right as we were transitioning to the MPP-D, I decided to pursue my love for eating disorder counseling. Be sure to scroll to the end to see our fur babies next to us while teaching! The perks of virtual work!!

Saturday morning was cold and windy, but it was warm and high energy inside of ISU’s State Gym. I had the opportunity to present at their first Annual Symposium for their student employees who are personal trainers and fitness instructors!

I shared sooo many resources they could utilize as a student as well as recommend to the students they work with. My presentation was “Nourishing the Whole Person: A Sustainable, Holistic, Weight-Inclusive Approach” I love sharing the philosophy that there is so much more to health than their weight!

Being a preceptor is one of my greatest joys at work. I love mentoring and sharing a weight-inclusive approach with future healthcare professionals, and this past month with Jasmine was truly special.

Jasmine, who is completing her Master of Professional Practice in Dietetics through Iowa State University, spent just over a month with me—and her enthusiasm was contagious from day one. She quickly stepped into leadership roles, guiding client nutrition counseling sessions and, by Day 2, co-leading a presentation for Honors Students alongside my student employee. She also taught my monthly Diabetes class for students recently diagnosed with prediabetes or diabetes, bringing clarity, compassion, and confidence to the room.

Eating disorder care is a specialty area, so I led those sessions, but Jasmine brought thoughtful insight and curiosity that sparked rich discussions afterward. Those conversations reminded me that precepting is a true two-way street—the preceptor learns from the student too, and that’s what makes this experience so meaningful.

I feel grateful for the opportunity to mentor emerging professionals like Jasmine. Watching her grow, contribute, and shine was a privilege. I will be mentoring 2 more of ISU’s student Spring Semester!

Walking across Iowa State University's campus today was a treat, with the autumn colors in full swing. I'm grateful to be teaching Weight Inclusive Care in the dietetic nutrition counseling class. Sharing this vital information with future RDs is truly fulfilling. Currently, I am a preceptor for Jasmine (pictured), an energetic and motivated Master's student in Professional Practice-Dietetics.

Today I had the opportunity to speak in Health Studies Class. I love sharing the message of weight inclusive care. The main point of this presentation was to demonstrate sustainable health and well-being without harmful messaging and weight stigma. Of course we touched on how BMI is not evidenced based, oversimplified, poor indicator or health and focuses on one measure (body composition) and does a poor job even on that! There was a focus on body respect and how do you do this with so many obstacles (ie time, pressure to look a certain way, eating disorders etc).

PSA from American College of Obstetrics and Gynecologists!!!

“In more than two decades of research on the use of acetaminophen in pregnancy, not a single reputable study has successfully concluded that the use of acetaminophen in any trimester of pregnancy causes neurodevelopmental disorders in children. In fact, the two highest-quality studies on this subject—one of which was published in JAMA last year—found no significant associations between use of acetaminophen during pregnancy and children’s risk of autism, ADHD, or intellectual disability.

"The data from numerous studies have shown that acetaminophen plays an important—and safe—role in the well-being of pregnant women."

My private practice brought me to my yearly gig at Des Monies University for a discussion on Weight Inclusive Care. Healthcare Without Harmful Stigma. As I was updating my slides, my intent was to make it more concise..well I ended up adding more information on the history of BMI and the 1998 controversy around how the categories were updated. I always get great thoughtful questions from the PA students and they are super engaged which makes teaching so fun. So fun, I end up making them laugh with my story telling. Learning while laughing is always a good thing! Thank you for the yearly invitation!
