As the weather gets chillier and winter flu and cold season continues, it’s important to take steps to prevent illness and to check in with you and your child’s health care providers. ❄️
To boost your winter wellness, prioritize sleep, take vitamin D supplements (with approval from your doctor), sip herbal teas to warm your body, use a humidifier to prevent nose bleeds and sore throats from dry winter air, and wash your hands regularly with warm soapy water. 🍵💤🧼
WIC also offers health care referrals and nutrition education to help your family stay healthy this season, learn more at www.Muni.Org/WIC

This is a program sponsored by the Anchorage School District. Play to Learn Playgroups bring together children (preschool aged, not yet in kindergarten), their caregivers, an early childhood teacher, and a community resource specialist. Caregivers are required to stay with their child at all times while participating in the P2L Playgroup program. Siblings are welcome to join! These weekly playgroups build a community for family support and work on positive classroom behaviors. Caregivers have a chance to connect with other adults who have children the same age while also learning about local resources, information, and ideas for age-appropriate activities to practice at home with the resource specialist. Did you know? 🤔Oats contain large amounts of beta-glucan, a type of soluble fiber! Beta-glucan partially dissolves in water and forms a thick, gel-like solution in your gut. 🥣 This helps move food further along through your digestive system and creates prebiotic effects! ✨
The health benefits of beta-glucan fiber found in foods like oatmeal include:
🌟reduced blood glucose and insulin response
🌟increased growth of good bacteria in the digestive tract
🌟regulation of type 2 diabetes
What are your favorite ways to make oatmeal for your family? 🫐🥛🍌

The shorter, darker days and lack of sunlight can make January feel long and tough to get through at times. Remember, taking care of your mental health is part of taking care of your family. It's okay to not be okay, you are not alone. ❤️

Folic Acid is an important B vitamin that helps the body make healthy new cells. While everyone needs folic acid, people who are pregnant, or plan on becoming pregnant, need extra folic acid supplementation in addition to eating vitamin-rich foods. Getting enough folic acid before and during pregnancy can prevent major birth defects in a developing baby’s spine and brain.
Some foods with folic acid include:
🥬 Leafy green vegetables
🍑 Fresh, frozen, and canned fruits
🫘Dried or canned beans, fresh or frozen peas, and nuts
🍞Enriched breads, cereals, and other whole grain products

Dry January is a time when people take a break from drinking and examine their relationship with alcohol. It may be part of a New Year’s resolution to incorporate healthy behaviors into your routine. It’s still possible to have an adult social life with sobriety.
Finding creative, less expensive, and better for you alternatives are possible to empower yourself in having healthy habits.
Whatever the reason, taking a break from alcohol for an entire month may provide the space to cultivate alternatives for relaxing, socializing, and coping with stress.
1. Identify Why You Drink And Find A Replacement
2. Let Loved Ones Know For Support
3. Have Alternatives For Parties To Still Participate In Gatherings
4. Have A “No, Thanks” At The Ready
5. Pay Attention To How You Feel – Notice Your Progress!
6. Have A Plan In Place For The End Of The Month – Implement Long Term Changes
