Alaska Breast Center

Alaska Breast Center Margaret Jayich, MD is a board-certified general surgeon. Fellowship training is the highest level of medical training in the U.S.

Alaska Breast Center’s comprehensive breast care program is specifically designed to meet the needs of Alaskan residents who are concerned about breast health and breast problems. Alaska Breast Center is one of the few breast cancer centers in Alaska that is proficient in BREAST PRESERVATION SURGERY which strives to keep as much healthy breast tissue as possible and works with plastic surgeons to achieve an optimal natural appearance of a healthy breast after surgery. The Alaska Breast Center includes a team of two fellowship-trained breast surgeons, bringing expertise from the world-renowned MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston and the Hoag Breast Center in California. Dr. Jayich is fellowship-trained in breast surgical oncology and specializes 100% in breast surgery and oncoplastic “breast preservation” surgery. Dr. Jayich received her fellowship from the prestigious University of Southern California. She completed her residency in General Surgery at the Saint Louis University School of Medicine. She received her MD degree at the University of Washington School of Medicine in Seattle. Dr. Jayich is one of few MD fellowship-trained breast surgeons in Alaska. She trained with Dr. Melvin Siverstein at the prestigious Hoag Breast Center in Newport Beach, CA. Dr. Silverstein is widely regarded as one of the world leaders in oncoplastic breast preservation surgery having written five books on breast cancer surgery. The Hoag Breast Center has 7 breast surgeons, 4 breast oncologists, and 15 MDs in radiation oncology. Dr. Charles Portera is a board-certified general surgeon with more than 20 years of experience specializing in breast care. Dr. Portera is fellowship-trained in surgical oncology and cancer biology — the highest level of medical training in the U.S. His fellowship training was at MD Anderson Cancer Institute in Houston, Texas — one of the most prestigious cancer institutes in the world. Dr. Portera brings this experience to Alaska after a busy surgical oncology practice in Tennessee. Dr. Charles Portera specializes in new surgical techniques that preserve the cosmetic appearance of the female breast, while removing the breast cancer. BREAST PRESERVATION SURGERY involves several steps:

The cancerous tissue is removed and a pathologist near the operating room confirms that all cancerous tissue has been removed. The surgical team — which can include Dr. Portera working with a board-certified plastic surgeon — then focuses on obtaining the best possible cosmetic outcome in breast appearance. This may include plastic surgery on both breasts to achieve the best possible cosmetic result. During and after treatment for breast cancer, Alaska Breast Center coordinates your ongoing care with any of your existing primary care physicians, e.g. family practice, OB/Gyn, mammography center, radiology, oncologist, etc.. The Tyrer-Cuzick questionnaire enables a woman to take an online questionnaire that calculates breast cancer risk. The calculation is based on answers to questions about age at first period, height, weight, childbearing history, family history of breast cancer, menopausal status, and use of hormone replacement therapy. A study published in JAMA Oncology in 2018 found that the Tyrer-Cuzick breast cancer risk assessment tool has been a valid tool for 20 years. A woman can take the questionnaire at:

A mastectomy is a more extensive surgery where the entire breast tissue is removed. Total (Simple) Mastectomy is the removal of the entire breast tissue, including the ni**le and ar**la. After mastectomy, some women choose to undergo breast reconstruction to restore the breast’s appearance. Reconstruction can be done using implants or the patient’s own tissues (flap surgery).
