👂Tune in as Jalisa Ingram, our Cancer Program Coordinator, introduces us to Nolan the Colon — a giant inflatable colon that spreads awareness of colorectal cancer rates and the importance of screenings among Tribal communities in Alaska. 🩺

Alaska Native people have some of the highest colon cancer rates in the world, but they also have higher screening rates — a testament to the great work our communities are doing in talking about colon cancer and destigmatizing colonoscopies. 💪

Colorectal cancer screenings are recommended for all Alaska Native and 40 or older. Learn more here 👉 https://anthc.org/march-is-a-reminder-for-alaska-native-people-40-and-older-to-be-screened-for-colon-cancer-2/

Colon cancer screenings don’t have to be a big orca-stration! 🐳

Colorectal cancer screening is recommended for Alaska Native people 40 and older. Colon cancer is a leading type of cancer among Alaska Native people, but it is also one of the most preventable.

Steps to schedule colon cancer screening at ANMC:

1. Make an appointment with your primary care provider for colon cancer screening.
2. When you see your primary care provider, ask for a referral to the ANMC Colorectal Cancer (CRC) Screening Clinic and request a colonoscopy.
3. Your provider will set up the referral.
4. The CRC Screening Clinic will contact you to schedule your appointment.

Alternatively, you can call the ANMC CRC Screening Clinic for assistance at 907-729-4444. The clinic will work with you and your provider to schedule the appropriate referral.

🤔 Should only men get screened for colon cancer? Alaska Native women actually have higher colorectal cancer rates than Alaska Native men.

Colon cancer is one of the leading cancers among Alaska Native people, yet many misconceptions continue to exist. Dr. Blair Curtis, ANTHC Physician Gastroenterologist, sheds light on some of these myths.

Colon cancer is treatable with early detection. Schedule your colonoscopy if you are Alaska Native and 40 or older, here 👉 https://anthc.org/crc

Congratulations to Emma Clark, a Registered Nurse in Family Birthing Services, on her DAISY Award! 🌼

Developed to recognize extraordinary nurses, the DAISY Award is given to three nurses per quarter who regularly go above and beyond in the care they provide.

Here’s what a colleague wrote about Emma in their nomination:

“Emma has gone above and beyond to help with our perinatal bereavement patients in the last year. Helping make follow-up phone calls and resources to help make things easier for nursing staff as they navigate this with patients. But recently she really went above and beyond with a family experiencing stillbirth. She took the time to help the family look into funding support for burial with AK Afterglow, which is a huge stress relief for the family. She also helped make sure that they had as many memory and memento items to take home as possible, even if it meant staying late on shift. When the Now I Lay Me down to sleep photographer was unable to come she stepped into that role to make sure the family had photos to go home with. She used our white Christmas lights (that are used for photography) and created a beautiful display for this family to look at their memory items during their stay. I truly don't have words for how beautiful and special it was to see. It not only was so special to look at but really was able to respectfully honor this baby's life as well. The family really loved showing it to other staff as well. This type of exemplary bereavement care is how we want to care for all our families experiencing perinatal loss. So beyond proud of the care Emma provided to this family as well as all of her patients."

Patients, their families, and fellow staff can nominate nurses for DAISY Awards.
