There is some incredible technology that uses sound already.

Why not add firefighting to that list?

Imagine, firefighters at a place without a hydrant, not having to worry about running out of water from a tanker.

Absolutely outstanding!

Cool tool! And cooler communication access!

Cool tool! And cooler communication access!

Good news for those who have ABLE account through STABLE Kentucky!

ABLE today is excited to announce a partnership with Communication Service for the Deaf (CSD) on a new inclusive tool that will significantly expand ABLE outreach to the Deaf and hard-of-hearing (D/HH) community through American Sign Language (ASL).

D/HH community members can access the service by visiting www.abletoday.org and clicking the “ASL Chat” box at the top right of the homepage. From there, users are directed to the CSD site, where they can connect with an operator trained to answer questions in ASL and provide resources for all ABLE programs.

🔊 Fun Fact Friday! 📅

Your ears are amazing at figuring out where sounds are coming from! The tiny differences in timing and loudness between each ear allow your brain to pinpoint the direction of a sound, like knowing which side the doorbell is on without looking.

Tip: This spatial hearing helps keep you safe in daily life, protect it by avoiding prolonged exposure to loud noise.

For nearly a decade, I went back and forth on whether I should even attempt this.

It was partially because I didn't care, but another part of the equation was actually the opposite.

This isn’t the kind of test you can just study for and pass. There is no study matetial. It’s completely competence-based. You either know how to do the work… or you don't.

I mostly found the idea an annoyance, and that made it easy to keep putting off.

But over time, I realized something.

The point isn’t the certification itself. The point is being able to serve people better. Especially in something as important as hearing. Communication, relationships, even long-term health are all tied to it. And what says trust to new potential patients more than holding a national board certification?

So I finally took the step.

I took my National Board Certification in Hearing Instrument Sciences exam.

And I’m excited to share that I passed on my first try.

I’m looking forward to continuing to learn, grow, and help people stay connected to the conversations and people that matter most.

"He who hath ears to hear, let him hear."

I had the opportunity to go tonight and meet with the good people at the Elkton Gospel Church.

While I was there I got to participate in services offered by Brother Hughes, enjoy a delicious meal, and engage in the fellowship of this fine group of individuals and families.

The conversation on hearing health was well engaged with and there were lots of questions and comments. We discussed the current condition of hearing as a nation and Kentucky specifically. We also talked about hearing protection, hearing loss, and different ways to conserve and treat hearing related concerns.

If you're ever in the area, stop by and say hi to my new friends, enjoy the good word by Brother Hughes, some good food, and the fellowship of the friendly folk who attend.

🎶 Fun Fact Friday! 📅

Your brain remembers sounds, not just your ears! The auditory cortex stores patterns of music, voices, and other noises you hear often. That’s why you can recognize a favorite song instantly.

It is important to protect your hearing from repeated exposure to very loud sounds because it can eventually lead to hearing loss. Prolonged hearing loss cab ultimately impact your memory over time.

Hearing isn't just a "if you don't use it you lose it" ordeal, but rather a "you don't protect it you lose it" condition, respectively (and noting that other conditons can have an impact).

Tip: Protect your ears by giving them regular breaks from loud noise. Your brain, and your ears, will thank you! 🎧

👂 Fun Fact Friday! 📅

Your ears never stop growing! Unlike most body parts, your ears and nose continue to grow slowly throughout your life. This happens because the cartilage keeps changing shape over time.

Tip: Regular hearing checks are important as we age, not just because of ear growth, but because hearing changes naturally with time.

Come out to the Todd County Public Library on April 24th for a free health event and "hear" what its all about! 🏫

What is the silent epidemic that is sweeping the nation?

Is Kentucky really higher in hearing loss than the national average?

What can you do to protect your hearing?

What can you do when hearing loss begins?

What are the co-conditions that can present with hearing loss?

You "heard" it "hear" (Wait, is that the right word? "Sounds" right. 🤷🏻‍♂️😅) first!
