The gallbladder is a four-inch, pear-shaped organ positioned under the liver in the upper-right section of the abdomen. The gallbladder stores and concentrates bile produced in the liver. Bile aids in the digestion of fat and is released from the gallbladder into the upper small intestine in response to food (especially fats). This allows fat-soluble vitamins and nutrients to be more easily absorbed into the bloodstream. Cholecystitis is the inflammation of the gallbladder. Gallbladder disease can include infections, stones or blockage of the gallbladder, and inflammation. Nausea and vomiting are common symptoms of gallbladder problems. The most common symptom of a gallbladder problem is pain. Chills or fever can signal that you have an infection. Jaundice (yellow-tinted skin) may be a sign of a block or stone in the common bile duct. If you have an infection, you need treatment before it worsens and becomes dangerous.

Abdominal pain can have causes that aren’t due to underlying disease. Many different conditions can cause abdominal pain. Examples include constipation, gas, overeating, stress, or muscle strain. Other causes of abdominal pain include appendicitis, cancer, abdominal aortic aneurysm, cholecystitis, diverticulitis, heartburn, indigestion, or gastroesophageal reflux (GERD). Diseases that can cause chronic abdominal pain include gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), Crohn’s disease, lactose intolerance, irritable bowel syndrome, or spastic colon. The main causes of abdominal pain are infection, abnormal growths, inflammation, obstruction (blockage), and intestinal disorders. Infections in the intestines and blood can cause bacteria to enter the digestive tract, resulting in abdominal pain. Some common causes of abdominal pain include diarrhea, constipation, stomach flu, and acid reflux when stomach contents leak backward into the esophagus.

Dr. Victoria Murdock is certified in the use of the Da Vinci robotic surgery system and proficient in laparoscopic surgery. She is excited to be part of the Alaska medical community and welcomes other physicians to contact her directly related to general surgery issues, robotic surgery cases, laparoscopic surgery and surgical treatment of hernias. DA VINCI ROBOTIC ASSISTED LAPAROSCOPY

Compared to the long, relatively inflexible tools used in non-assisted laparoscopic surgery, the DaVinci Robotic System provides special instruments able to provide a 360-degree rotation, along with a high-definition camera that gives the surgeon a 3-dimensional view. The tiny incisions lower the risk of infection, reduce blood loss, and reduce pain during recovery. The use of the Robotic Surgery System enables the trained surgeon to do more surgeries laparoscopically that previously required “open surgery.”
