Co-occurring disorders don't discriminate—they affect people of all ages, backgrounds, and walks of life.

The relationship between these conditions is complex: sometimes mental health symptoms lead to substance use, sometimes substance use triggers mental health challenges, and often they develop simultaneously. What's important to know is that effective, compassionate treatment exists, and recovery from both conditions is absolutely possible.

Medication is an important part of treating co-occurring disorders, and it's okay to utilize this support.

Antidepressants, mood stabilizers, anxiolytics, and medication-assisted treatment (MAT) for substance use disorders can be life-changing when combined with therapy and support. The key is working with a specialist who understands dual diagnosis and can carefully monitor how medications impact your recovery.

Medication isn't a weakness— it's a tool that helps you heal more quickly and effectively. Always discuss your full history with your provider to ensure safe and effective treatment.

We're almost three weeks into Dry January!

Whether you're participating to reset your relationship with alcohol, support your mental health, or simply curious about the benefits, this is a meaningful practice.

For those managing co-occurring conditions, a break from alcohol can reveal important insights about mood, sleep, anxiety, and overall wellbeing.

If you're finding it challenging, that's valuable information too—and might be worth discussing with a healthcare provider. Whatever your experience this month, you're learning more about yourself and what you need to thrive.

Wondering where to start with treatment for co-occurring disorders?

Consider getting a comprehensive assessment from a provider trained in dual diagnosis. They can help you understand how your mental health and substance use interact and create a personalized treatment plan - or refer you out to a program with a higher level of care.

Treatment options range from outpatient therapy and psychiatry to intensive outpatient programs (IOP), partial hospitalization (PHP), or residential treatment, depending on your needs. Many people benefit from combining professional treatment with peer support groups.

At AKBH, we offer level one treatment for substance use alongside mental health treatment when mental illness is the primary presenting problem.

There's no one-size-fits-all approach—what matters is finding what works for you.

Many people use substances to cope with overwhelming emotions, trauma, or mental health symptoms—a pattern called "self-medication." Someone might drink to quiet anxiety, use stimulants to manage depression, or turn to other substances to numb emotional pain.

While it may provide temporary relief, self-medication often worsens both mental health and substance use over time, creating a cycle that's hard to break alone.

Recognizing this pattern is the first step to understanding what you truly need and finding healthier ways to heal.

At Alaska Behavioral Health, a significant portion of our adult clients struggle with both mental illness and substance use. Our clinicians address substance use during therapy using evidence-based practices including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and DBT skills.

AKBH clinician Esther says she looks for the reasons behind the substance use. She tries to help clients change the way they think and give them the tools to change what they are doing.

Recovery is possible, and the right support team can make all the difference!
