DaVinci Robotic SURGERY

DaVinci Robotic Surgery improves the laparoscopic surgery method. Compared to the long, relatively inflexible tools used in laparoscopic surgery, the DaVinci Robotic System provides smaller instruments that can provide a 360-degree rotation, along with a high-definition camera that gives the surgeon a 3-dimensional view on a video monitor. While the term “robotic” may imply that a machine is performing the surgery, this is NOT the case. Robotic technology merely provides the trained surgeon with much more precision to the movements of the surgeon’s hands on the controls. The tiny incisions used with the DaVinci method lower the risk of infection, reduce blood loss, and reduce pain during recovery. The use of the Robotic Surgery System enables the trained surgeon to do more surgeries laparoscopically that previously required “open surgery.” With DaVinci Robotic Surgery, most patients go home the day of surgery, heal faster and resume routine activities, and return to work earlier. It is important to remember that not all hernias are suitable for laparoscopic or DaVinci Robotic Surgery repair. Where do hernias occur?

If you have a hernia, you are not alone. A hernia occurs when an internal organ or part of the intestines pushes through a defect or weakened area in the abdominal wall. Hernias commonly occur in the belly button (umbilicus) and groin (inguinal) area, but they can also occur anywhere along the lining of the trunk including the upper inner thigh and the back. Ventral hernia is a general term for any abdominal wall hernia. Inguinal hernias are more common in men because during fetal development, the testicles drop from the inside of the abdomen into the sc***um through the inguinal canal, and this space may not close completely. Hernias are common, with the FDA reporting more than one million hernia surgeries performed in the United States each year. They occur more frequently as we age, perhaps due to age-related weakening of the tissue. Hernias occur in both men and women.

What is a hernia?

Hernias are caused by a combination of muscle weakness and strain. A hernia may develop quickly or over a longer period of time. Adult hernias will never resolve on their own, and surgery is typically the only way to repair the affected area. In some cases, watchful waiting may be used for a small hernia. But in many cases a hernia may worsen, becoming more difficult to repair as it enlarges. With Laparoscopic Hernia Repair, three small incisions of less than one inch in the lower abdomen are used to gently expose the area behind the hernia (on the inside of the abdominal wall). High-definition video imaging is utilized to facilitate a gentle exposure of the hernia. A customized mesh is placed behind the muscular wall to repair the hernia defect. The use of mesh in this operation has a long history of safety and durability. The larger the hernia, the more likely surgical mesh will be needed to reinforce the repair and lower the risk of a future recurrence.
