In April 2020, Anchorage voters approved a 5% sales tax on alcoholic beverages — a decision that directly fuels programs that help our community heal.

For organizations like Akeela, this revenue supports:
- Substance misuse prevention and treatment
- Mental health services
- Programs for individuals experiencing homelessness

Thanks to this funding, Akeela and other non-profits, can continue providing life-changing support, recovery resources, and safe spaces for Alaskans and their families. Every sip contributes to stronger, healthier communities.

Addiction affects individuals, families, and communities across Alaska—but hope and healing are always within reach. While Alaska’s drug overdose death rate remains higher than the national average, these numbers do not define our future. They remind us why compassion, connection, and access to care matter more than ever.

Every person deserves support, dignity, and the opportunity to heal. At Akeela, we believe recovery is possible and that together, awareness and action can lead to lasting change.

At Akeela, we know bipolar disorder affects mood, energy, and daily life far beyond the typical “ups and downs.” In Alaska, long winters and dramatic shifts in daylight can add another layer of challenge—impacting mood, sleep, and overall mental health. Many Alaskans live with bipolar disorder quietly, often facing stigma that can delay care and support.

World Bipolar Day is about raising awareness, fostering understanding, and breaking down barriers. Bipolar disorder is a medical condition, and with the right support, people can and do live full, meaningful lives.

At Akeela, we’re here to support individuals, families, and communities because awareness leads to understanding, and understanding leads to hope.

Our Story

Akeela started off as a single residential substance abuse treatment program known as Future House located in the Mt. View neighborhood of Anchorage back in 1974. Within a few years the name changed to Akeela House and in 1981 the program relocated to the Midtown neighborhood of Anchorage where it is still providing services today.

Through the years Akeela has grown to where they are today. This growth includes having three residential treatment programs, several outpatient treatment programs, adult and children mental health outpatient services, to***co prevention services, transitional housing services and ASAP services, is several communities around Alaska.

Akeela continues to provide quality clinical and prevention services to people in the great state of Alaska.
