Much of what we hear about autism comes through diagnostic language. Signs, symptoms, and indicators help us recognize neurodivergence and access support. But when autism is only understood through the medical model, the picture becomes incomplete. The reality of neurodivergence is much richer.

Autism, like any neurotype, includes unique ways of perceiving, connecting, regulating, and experiencing joy. In this post we’re focusing specifically on autistic joy, which autistic adults often describe as intense, immersive, and full-body.

We want to move toward a culture that celebrates joyful exuberance for everyone, however that joy presents.

Come talk with us Tuesday, March 10 to learn more and celebrate joy together. https://www.trailhouse.org/event-details/trailhouse-talks-autistic-joy

Hi, I’m Allison! I’m an Occupational Therapist who genuinely loves working with kids. I enjoy figuring out what makes each child tick and finding creative, playful ways to help them feel more confident and capable in their everyday lives. My work is rooted in a neurodiversity-affirming approach, and I strive to create a space where kids feel comfortable being exactly who they are.
Movement has always been a big part of my life. As a former professional athlete and now a competitive pickleball player and coach, I’ve experienced how much confidence and regulation can grow through physical activity. That perspective naturally carries into my work in ways that feel engaging and individualized.
I’m excited to connect with families and be part of the Trailhouse community.

Will Steer, MEd, ATR-BC, LPAT joins us as an Art Therapist and mental health provider. Will brings experience supporting children, teens, and adults through art, play, and sandtray therapy. His work adds an important layer to what we offer at Trailhouse, especially in the area of mental health. With Will, we’re expanding into teen groups as well as 1:1 mental health and art therapy.

Alessa Boerste joins our community team as an educator and play facilitator. Alessa has a background in early childhood and play-based learning, and she’ll be extending our community offerings through Parents’ Night Out, curated play dates, and interest-based groups. Her focus is on creating thoughtful, engaging spaces where kids can connect authentically.

We’re so glad to have both of them here and excited about what this means for our families and community. If you’re interested in scheduling with Will or joining one of Alessa’s upcoming offerings, just let us know!

One thing we learned in 2025 is that our community truly sets us apart. It’s valued by you and by our team, and we’re really grateful for the families we get to work alongside!

To help keep that connection strong, we’re planning one community event each month in 2026.

RSVP in the events section of our website www.trailhouse.org

The snow is beautiful, but that doesn’t mean we aren’t dreaming of the warm sun and our toes in the creek! We’re planning another fun, connected summer and would love your input. Last year showed us how meaningful groups can be when kids grow and learn together around shared interests. This year, we’re adding to our offerings and want to shape them based on what you need. Please take a moment to fill out our short survey so we can plan the best summer yet! Thank you ☀️ https://forms.gle/oAP5VWPtiyaW3YQB9

Our work is neurodiversity-affirming and centered on whole-family wellbeing. Therapists collaborate across disciplines to support regulation, communication, and authentic growth. With direct access to the Anchorage Trail, families move, explore, and connect with the natural world as part of the therapeutic process.

We’re looking for a mental health, play, speech or occupational therapist who wants to grow alongside us in this work! Email mary@trailhouse.org to get the conversation started.
