Alaska IBEW

Alaska IBEW Union Members Live Better. As union members, we bargain collectively with our employers over wages, Louis, Missouri on November 28, 1891.

The International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers was founded in St. IBEW Local 1547 was chartered in Alaska on October 1, 1946, assuming the jurisdiction of IBEW work in Alaska from Local 46 in Seattle, and continues to advocate for safety and protection of the rights of electrical and communications workers, as well as local government employees, health care industry employees, and many more non-construction occupations. Local 1547 represents workers in many diverse construction classifications including power linemen, inside wiremen, power plant workers and technicians, mechanics, warehouse workers, line clearance tree trimmers and heavy equipment operators. Classifications in communications include telephone linemen, installation and repair workers, telephone operators, central office technicians, cable maintenance workers, and fiber optic specialists, just to name a few. We also take pride in knowing that our efforts in strengthening safety and worker rights benefit many other workers in our state, not just those we represent. Traditionally, people think of IBEW members as people who work with electricity—but over the years, other classifications have joined the ranks of Local 1547. Some of the many classifications we represent are: cooks, certified nursing assistants, clerks, accounting specialists, engineers, city and municipal employees, property management workers, maintenance custodians, gardeners, librarians, plant services workers, programmers, radar operators, cashiers and x-ray technicians. With close to 5000 members, IBEW Local 1547 is, we believe, one of the strongest unions in the state of Alaska.

As many of you are aware, the Mat-Su Valley and Kenai Peninsula experienced extreme winds last weekend, resulting in power outages and other disruptions across the region. Frigid winter temperatures added to the extreme high winds. And while many of us were at home, several of our IBEW Brothers and Sisters gathered their tools and equipment, left their families at home, and got to work. A very sincere thank you goes to those IBEW Brothers and Sisters who worked through the night, through the days - both indoors and out - to restore power and maintain essential services. Thank you for everything you do!

Attention: MAT-SU Valley residents affected by the power outage and windstorm.

UPDATE 4:00 pm 12/7: We are very grateful for the public's generosity. We are unable to accept donations at the shelter at this time. After a disaster, people are incredibly generous and often ask how to help. Financial donations are the quickest and best way to support people impacted by disasters. Donations of clothing and household items divert resources away from our mission, whereas financial donations can be directed to those in need more quickly.

UPDATE 11:00 am 12/7: The shelter location has moved to the Menard Sports Center (1001 S Clapp St, Wasilla, AK 99654).

Anyone affected by the power outage and windstorm is welcome to stop by for a warm place to stay, snacks, to charge their phone, and get other support.

Anyone impacted who needs assistance can call 1-800-RED CROSS. For power outage safety information, visit https://rdcrss.org/4iQOwvW or download the Red Cross Emergency App.

Mike Nalewaja, member of IBEW Local 1547, passed away the weekend before Thanksgiving. He started his electrical career non-union but a few years after journeying out he was recruited into the IBEW. He quickly learned and realized the wonderful opportunities and lifestyle he was able to afford, being part of the union. He shared his craft of electrical work with many apprentices who looked up to him. He was truly a great teacher to all!
