Ricky David Sowell
May 7, 1954 – December 10, 2025
Ricky David Sowell, 71, of Andalusia, Alabama, passed away peacefully on December
10, 2025. Born on May 7, 1954, in Andalusia to John Lewis and Madge Sowell, Ricky
grew up with strong family values and a love for hard work. He graduated from
Andalusia High School in 1972 and began building a life defined by dedication, humility,
and generosity.
Ricky’s early career started at the Andalusia Star-News, where he learned the value of
persistence and responsibility. He later worked briefly at Alatex alongside his father
before serving a short time in Montgomery. Eventually, Ricky returned home to work for
International Paper in Babbie. His passion for trucking began when he joined Sowell
Logging with his father and brother, primarily harvesting timber for local companies.
Ricky was happiest behind the wheel, and in the 1990s, he turned that passion into
Ricky D. Sowell Enterprise, focusing on trucking. Nothing brought him more joy than
sharing the road with his beloved wife, Sue, riding along after her workday.
Outside of work, Ricky embraced life fully. He enjoyed boat rides on Gantt Lake with his
family, dancing with Sue at local gatherings, and racing with his boys. He was better
known to other truckers by his CB handle “Sugarfoot”. Ricky also took pride in building
and racing the iconic 1955 Chevy #99 Polekat with Larry. For years afterward, people
trusted Ricky to build engines that few could replicate, a testament to his skills and
hands-on dedication.
Ricky is survived by his wife of 41 years, Sue Sowell; three sons, Shannon Roos, Justin
Roos, and Adam “Roho” Sowell (Yvonne); grandchildren, Kayla Yates (Joey), Elizabeth
Mitchell, Cameron Roos (Emma), Hunter King and John David Sowell; great-
grandchildren, Taylen Grooms, Jantzen Yates, Eleanor Marie Roos, and Annie Roos
Yates; brother Larry Sowell (Linda); and nephew Jeffrey Sowell (Karen). He was
preceded in death by his parents, John Lewis and Madge Sowell, and niece, Aimee
Sowell.
Visitation will be held Friday, December 12, 2025, from 6:00–8:00 p.m. at Keahey
Funeral Home. Funeral services will follow on Saturday, December 13, 2025, at 3:00
p.m. at Keahey Funeral Home, with Bro. Robert Canant officiating.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to Aveanna Hospice for their compassionate care
during Ricky’s battle with cancer. Ricky will be remembered for his strength of character,
kindness and devotion for many years to come.
