Community Statement from The Mending Hearts Initiative In Response to the Recent Tragedy on Scarborough Road:
We are heartbroken by the violence that erupted during what should have been a joyous Juneteenth celebration in our Anderson County community. Our thoughts and deepest prayers are with the family of Laporshia Janae Gray Cobb, and with the many individuals who were injured and traumatized by this senseless act.
As mental health professionals and as members of this very community, we know that the impact of such violence does not end when the sirens fade. It leaves behind grief, fear, and deep, unspoken pain, especially for our children, families, and those who witnessed the chaos firsthand.
We want you to know: you are not alone.
The Mending Hearts Initiative is committed to showing up; not only in moments of peace, but in times of pain and crisis. In the coming days, we will be organizing a Community Healing Circle to hold space for anyone affected. This will be a safe, judgment-free gathering where we can process emotions, honor those impacted, and begin the work of collective healing.
If you or someone you know is struggling to cope with what happened, please don’t hesitate to reach out. We are here with licensed counselors and trained volunteers who understand trauma, loss, and the power of community care.
Let us honor the lives affected by leaning into love, truth, and action, not fear. Healing begins when we name our pain, hold one another close, and refuse to let violence define who we are.
With empathy and strength,
The Mending Hearts Initiative
