Cold and flu season is here, and we’re seeing more kiddos with coughs, wheezing, and shortness of breath. As parents, it can be scary to know what’s “normal” and what’s a red flag 🚩. Here’s what to look out for 👇
🚨 Signs of Respiratory Distress in Children (or Adults):
- Breathing faster than normal or struggling to catch a breath
- Flaring nostrils
- Pulling in around the ribs or collarbone when breathing (Retractions)
- Wheezing or grunting sounds
- Pale, gray, or bluish color around lips or fingertips
- Acting unusually tired, restless, or confused
🏠 What You Can Do Right Away:
- Keep your child calm — crying can make breathing harder
- Sit them upright (not flat) to help open airways
- Use a humidifier or steamy bathroom to ease congestion
- Offer fluids to keep mucus thin
- Fever increases oxygen demand, so recommend managing with Tylenol/Ibuprofen if age appropriate
- If your child uses an inhaler or nebulizer — use it as directed by your physician
