Just noticed it has been since September for my last post. It has been a very busy Fall, with a bit of a "vacation" worked in to visit family. I would like to say things are calming down, but still a very busy time of year for us. I wasn't feeling the best last week (a bit of a diverticulitis episode) so there were a few days of just broth, tea and water. When I started feeling better I was absolutely CRAVING mashed potatoes and homemade cream gravy! Not the healthiest thing to crave...but after days of liquids I decided to give it a shot. Here is plate of homemade mashed reds, homemade pepper cream gravy and a few chicken nuggets for variety. It was soooo good. Put me back on the mend! So sorry for taking such a long break! I will try to do better with keeping up!

I hope you are all looking forward to the change coming. Winter is on the way. Had our first HUGE flakes last night on Halloween! Just a flurry, but it really makes you realize where you are really at with the weather. Christmas carols will be ringing out soon!

I stopped making Lasagna about 10 years ago when I developed an allergy to acidic foods (tomatoes being one of them), and Tim discovered he was lactose intolerant. This is the first year I have been able to get him to eat zucchini! He loves it roasted like steak fries with dry ranch dressing on them, and he loves them raw with dry ranch dressing on them. Are you seeing his new addiction to dry ranch dressing? Over the years as I have grown accustomed to our dietary needs and given up many foods, but I have realized that I can do organic tomatoes on occasion and not break out too bad. I use a rice cheese now for Tim, and of course our pasta is now GF so I use brown rice pasta (usually). I have tried in the past to hide zucchini in the best Chocolate Cake Ever...but Tim still wouldn't eat it. I decided last night to try Zucchini Lasagna! Oh My! It was so good! Made to our dietary needs, but it was wonderful to feel like we were eating "normal" for a change! I only got 1 blister on the roof of my mouth...so worth it! I used venison burger, Tim sliced my zucchini noodles, made my own fresh sauce, and of course that wonderful melted "cheese" is rice cheese. It was AMAZING! Low in calories and fat! One of the best dishes I have made in a long time. Saving this recipe! I can still smell it baking...YUM!

Chilly at night here with rain about every other day now. Nice storm last night! My hummers are gone for the year, but this morning we had 3 flocks of geese go over the farm. Not quite a fair exchange...but Bert sure gets excited!

Enjoy your week! Stay Safe, Stay Healthy, Stay Sane, Stay Happy!

I hope you all had a great Labor Day Weekend. We did! Good Food, went for a nice drive, and finished up a few things around home. Picture here is of my Cauliflower Potatoe Salad. I use cauliflower instead of potatoes. So good, and a great, light way to finish summer.

It has been in the 40's at nights now for about a week. I put all fresh hummingbird food out in my feeders on Friday. Saw a few birds Saturday...but by Sunday and the last few days just about 1 a day. Probably stragglers coming through migrating. I am sad. I LOVE MY HUMMERS! I am going to keep my feeders up for another week at least, but they are headed to warmer weather already. This is my sign of Fall. I love Fall, but I will miss my sweet, lively hummers!

That is about it for today. Just checking in. We have been having rain finally! I still have a few green tomoatoes out there to harvest, then the garden is done too. Time for my porch Mums!

Enjoy your week everyone!

It was 44' here last night. A bit chilly considering it is still SUMMER! I am trying to plan some bar-b-que food for this weekend, and all I can think about is Chili this morning. Temps during the day are mid 70's...which is perfect! But we haven't kicked the heat on yet so it is pretty chilly in the house this morning. I am bundled up like I do when it is -30 out. Trying to plan "end of the summer" eats to celebrate the weekend is tough when your fingers are so cold you can barely type! LOL! So far I have come up with brats & turkey breast on the grill with deviled eggs and potatoe salad (my version). We have cucs & onions we have been eating on for a few days, and fresh garden salsa. Maybe porkchops & coleslaw! Yup! That is sounding like a plan.

I am feeling the end of summer here folks, so enjoy your weekend and as always:

Extraction is done and now the rendering of wax and the winterizing of bees begins. All of our CSA orders have been filled, so things have calmed down a bit. Honey harvest was better than expected, but still worse than we had hoped. It was a good year considering the first real rain in months was this weekend! Got about an inch of rain and it was appreciated. Don't know if you can see the picture of my "web" in the crook of the hummer feeder hook! It was foggy, and sprinkling rain and it was beautiful. Not big on spiders...but this was worth the picture.

The bees are starting to calm down now that extraction is done. It has been chilly at night and that helps too. No freezing weather yet, but it was in the low 50's last night and suppose to be mid 40's tonight. With everything so dry the trees are already showing some color. Lots of golds and a few bright reds already. I have some tomatoes still coming on, but everything else is done. A busy week here with meetings, baby shower, wedding and the Holiday weekend!

Have a Blessed week all and enjoy your Holiday! As Always...

Tim finished extraction yesterday. Today is clean up, and finishing shipping orders. I have been bottling our CSA orders all week. Lots of honey being shared! I have to admit, we did get more honey than expected and it is so good! I think it is the best flavor yet! All natural, and I don't know what makes the difference, but this year is the best!

The hummers and bees have come to an accord in "sharing" the feeders. I have moved feeders, taken them down for days, changed the nectar formula...I have been fighting this for a week! I noticed yesterday birds and bees were both at the feeders! The bees group on the shady side of the feeders and the birds eat on the sunny side! They have learned to share! I am so happy! I washed and FILLED all the feeders this morning. They worked it out and now I can relax. Too bad they can't teach the rest of the world how to be nice and share! Nature Rocks! If you look closely at picture you can see hummer eating and a "beard" of bees on the other side hanging from the feeder.

We did get a little rain last night, much needed! Forecast looks like rain tomorrow! That would be awesome! I have baseball sized tomatoes...but they are still green! I have only picked 4, but when they turn I will have lots of them! I made fresh salsa last week, and will probably freeze the rest since I will pull them out and use them for Tim. I did have some salsa though and did only get 1 blister in my mouth. They are so fresh and good I had to take the chance. Next time might be worse...but this time it was worth it!

Enjoy your week all!

Angry Bee Update
I was able to get my feeder off of the porch yesterday without being stung. Even I was shocked! LOL! Tim was in his bee suit and he grabbed the strawberry for me. I only had 1 straggler hanging onto the strawberry, and she quickly flew to the window for me to let her out. I was able to fill the window feeder and the one I had in the tree (now the porch feeder) last night and I hung the porch feeder back over by the tree on the shepherds hook with the chimes. Better chimes than mad bees! The chimes feeder is almost empty this morning! I made more food, I will fill up the chime feeder again soon, but I am not filling the strawberry until the bees are gone. There is quite a few bees out there looking for that strawberry this morning! If I don't see any this afternoon, I will wait till evening (the bees will go home to their hives for the night) and I will hang it up then. Hopefully the bees will find their own food and not be interested in the lightened nectar I am feeding the hummers right now. I am hoping by tonight things will be back to normal? Is there such a thing? Wish me luck!

The picture is NOT Tim, but it gives you an idea of the amount of bees that accumulate around you! I am not going to be out there taking pictures!

Angry Bees & Cake
Nick came up this last weekend to help Tim with honey extraction. It has been a tough year and it is not getting any easier. The bees are MAD this year that Tim is taking the honey. Usually he puts them into temporary hives with feed then takes the honey frames, extracts the honey, then puts the fresh frames back in and transfers the bees back to their hives, while keeping the feed onboard since the nectar flow is over. Usually they are happy bees. They get fresh hives, food close, and they can start putting on honey stores for themselves for winter. NOT THIS YEAR! They swarmed Tim so bad the other day I could barely see him through the fog of bees! Yes...he had his bee suit on! They are not happy bees this year. In the 4years we have been doing this, I have never seen them react this way. I was bragging about my hummingbird feeders last week...big mistake! The bees have taken them over...so much that I can't even get to them to take them down! The bees have left the one on the window alone, so I am keeping that one full, but the bees have taken up residence on the one on my front porch by the door and my favorite strawberry just to the other side of the drive. Tonight I am going to bring the one in from the porch. I am leaving the strawberry up as a decoy! I have done what I can, the bees do not care that they have feed on at the hives. I have watered down the ratio of sugar to water for the feeders (Tim does a very heavy sugar ratio in feeding the bees. The bees won't like the watered down feed and hopefully leave my hummers alone!) Sources say that the hummers won't mind the watered down feed and will continue to come. Even now with the bees they will fight for a place to feed. A bee sting will kill a hummer though, so I have been crazy trying to keep the bees from my birds! Tim says they will settle down, but it has been 2 days now and I don't see much of a change. I have not been stung, but the bees are just outside my front door and not leaving! Bert runs in and out...but he isn't happy about our visitors either. UGH.

This is an Oreo cake I made for Nick for his birthday. Chocolate Oreo cake with vanilla frosting and crushed Oreo's and mini Oreo's on top! I am not an Oreo fan...but is was good and I kept 1 piece for Tim and sent the rest home for Nick.

So, enjoy your day everyone. The farm truck is down, so we took it in for repairs this morning. Tim won't be pulling honey frames without the truck to transport, so maybe the bees will calm down. I hope so!

This is my new baby. A large Strawberry hummingbird feeder. Although I love the new feeder that was given to me...I LOVE the "Sarge" on top of the pole! He used to come to the window feeder. We call him Sarge, because he is short and stocky and moves for no one! They can't run him off the feeder! He just sits there until HE is done! Now Sarge has taken over the Strawberry! I mean TAKEN OVER! He sits up there on the pole, and if another hummer comes along, he bombs him away, then he takes a drink, then he goes right back up to his lookout post! ALL DAY! Last evening 3 others ganged up on him and ran him off...for a few seconds! They got a quick drink and then Sarge was back and run them off and went back to pole sitting. He is so cute...and hilarious! No one eats at his feeder! LOL! I have 2 other feeders, so no one is starving!

Tim started extraction of honey yesterday and is at it again today. I think he only got 1 hive done yesterday, and the same today. LOTS to do, but Nick is coming up next weekend to help. Looking forward to seeing Nick again already. His birthday is coming up this month, so I am going to cook his favorite meal (Beef Stroganoff) and do a surprise Birthday Cake! I am posting today because we have a VERY busy week here, so I thought I had better post today while I can. Today is the only day without something scheduled until next Monday! I meant BUSY week!

Funny thing about ants...they will use their dead comrades to make a bridge to get to my feeder! Only worked a couple of days until there were enough dead ants in the moat to make a bridge. Sick little things! SO...yesterday I cleaned it up and put fresh food in it and moved it out of the tree to a tall shepherds hook! It is right next to the tree I took it out of, but I didn't see any hummers on it yesterday. They were there this morning though, so I am hoping this will work. I did put Peppermint around the base of the pole and put it in my hands and rubbed it on the pole about 1/2 way up. I will check it this afternoon and see how it is doing. At least for now it is clean and they are eating!

A friend of ours who has a seasonal cabin is here this week and he stopped by last night to visit and I invited him for breakfast this morning. He loves watching my hummingbird feeder on the window. He has tried feeding them here, but he is never here enough and they lose interest waiting for him. Today he showed up for breakfast with his hummingbird feeder! Once I get it cleaned up I will have 3 feeders! It is so cute, I will take a picture once it is up! It is a hanging one also, so not exactly sure where I will put it...but I will find a place! The one I moved out of the tree is just outside the dining room window. The other one is on the living room window. I love being able to see them, but might hang this one from the outside of the porch. Easy to reach and the window feeder will have a waiting feeder so they don't dive bomb all the time. The window feeder only has 2 feeding stations, so they get a little backed up...this one will hang about 5 feet from the window off the porch so maybe they will feed there too! I think this one has 4-5 feeding stations, and it is a big one so I will be making ALOT of food!

Much to do today so just checking in. Have a great Hump Day All!

Hummers & Ants & Dens...Oh My!
We have bees in that equation too! It has been an interesting weekend. I have never had an ant problem, especially with my Hummingbird feeders. But, I noticed the tree feeder wasn't being used much and it looked like something floating in it. I went out and checked it and there was a ball (yes a ball) of ants in it! They must have climbed in the feeder holes and balled up to stay alive! YUK! So, I brought the feeder in and cleaned it well, but started research on how to deal with my ant problem. What I found out is that my feeder has an "ant trap" on the top that I didn't realize what it was! WOO HOO! I know ants hate Peppermint and it was listed as one of the things to use to keep them away. So I took my Peppermint out with me and put some on the hook in the tree. You should have seen the ants on the tree limb run away. So I put Peppermint oil mixed with a little vegetable oil in the lid (to keep the Peppermint oil from evaporating) and I think it is working. The hummers don't seem to mind and I will check it later today to make sure no ants. I will probably carry my Peppermint oil with me!

Now to the den. Tim found a good sized den in the side of the hill behind the garage. I first thought Badger, but they like sandy soil better, so probably not. No sign of Fox, so Tim thinks it might be a Groundhog. He filled in the hole and placed a big rock in front of it. There was nothing in it, so hopefully whatever was there has moved out. Bert runs and checks it all the time now since Dad was so interested in it!

Tim is moving boxes and extractor equipment over to our extraction building that we rent from a friend this time of year. It is so easy to have everything in one building that has electricity and hot water! He will start extraction next weekend and then I think Nick is coming up to help the next weekend. We have several bee enthusiasts that have asked Tim to help with their extraction. Not many extra boxes, but extraction equipment is a big expense if you only have a couple of hives. Tim is always happy to help!

That is a short update from here today. Hope you all have an amazing week! Happy August!

This has been a hard year for fruit. That being said I do have some frozen wild blueberries that were just calling my name this week. Since I have A/C now, I can use my oven and not heat up the house! That means I can bake...and bake I did. I came across this recipe and have never heard of Blueberry Upside Down Cake! I had to try it! I took it to Bible Study and it was a hit! Served with a little Real Whipped Cream (or Cool Whip) or just plain! It is amazing! My cake looked just like the cake on Pinterest! How often does that happen? Do you love blueberries? This is your next dessert! I am not posting recipe here but I have it saved on my Pinterest account or just look it up on Pinterest. So amazing! I have to admit, I used a boxed, gluten free, butter cake mix. I prepped the pan and blueberries as directed and made the cake batter and just poured it on top. I used a Bundt pan and timed baking for a Bundt pan. It did take about an extra 10 minutes to make this cake. Toothpick was clean so I pulled it out and cooled it for 15 minutes before putting a serving plate over it and flipping it over. Leave the pan over the cake until cool! All of the blueberry juice will trickle down into the cake! It is totally amazing. I was afraid the pan wouldn't lift off, but it came out perfect. Just had to share! This one is worth it!
