It’s tempting to think respect, patience, and self control are things we can demand from kids.
Most of the time, they’re things we teach.
Not in a lecture.
In the way we speak when we’re stressed.
In the way we handle frustration.
In the way we recover after we lose it.
Kids are watching how we do:
disagreement
disappointment
anger
mistakes
repair
If you want your child to speak respectfully, start with your tone.
If you want your child to pause before reacting, let them see you pause.
If you want your child to be kind to themselves, let them hear kindness from you even when they mess up.
This doesn’t mean you have to be calm all the time. Real families are messy.
It means you model what to do when you’re not proud of how you showed up.
