For this month, we’d like to highlight one of our grantees: FedUp Ministries. FedUp brings Southern hospitality to Michigan through food, care, and connection. Born during the pandemic, their mobile kitchen quickly became a vital resource for neighbors experiencing hardship, offering not just free, nutritious meals but also comfort and dignity.

Today, FedUp continues to grow with programs like WashUp, LiftUp, and Mini Chef Camp, nourishing body, mind, and spirit. Their mission is simple: meet people where they’re at and walk alongside them with love. None of this is possible without the support of the community, because everyone has a place at the table.

Continuing our highlight on the Turner Senior Wellness Program (TSWP), we’d like to highlight one of their staff members: Naysha Reviere. Neysha is the Assistant Director of TSWP and has been working there for the past four years. Some of her responsibilities include program creation and coordination and one of her favorite things about her work is meeting new people. We asked her more about her experience at TSWP.

What makes TSWP unique?
“Our members are our jewels! Most members are dedicated volunteers and have volunteered at TSWP for a number of years.”

What has been your most impactful experience at TSWP?
“The most impactful thing about working at TSWP is the warmth and gratitude I get from people when I can give a solution to a problem. Many people call or walk in our center in crisis mode and need assistance creating a game plan to solve a problem. It is rewarding to be able to offer solutions or point someone in the right direction to get the ball rolling.”

They also serve as a connector to resources in Washtenaw County and the surrounding areas!

At the heart of the Ypsilanti Deborah Strong Community, the Self-Sufficiency Store at Sauk Trail Pointe in Ypsilanti is helping families build brighter futures. Founded with the mission of “empowering [the] community through accessible programs and resources that build self-sufficiency, dignity, and opportunity,” the store provides essential items that residents earn through participation in personal growth and development programs.

Serving primarily families living in Sauk Trail Pointe community, the store has become an important resource for residents striving to stretch limited budgets and reduce financial stress while learning valuable resource management skills. Through a partnership with PMCH-CHS, Health Cafés offer an in-community welcoming space for residents to connect with healthcare professionals, discuss health topics of their choice, gather strategies for improving health, and shop a pop-up Self-Sufficiency Store using “Sauk Bucks” earned they’ve earned through program participation. For many without health insurance, this collaboration has helped bridge a critical gap in access to responsive, impactful healthcare and provided residents an opportunity to “buy” personal hygiene and household necessities.

The Self-Sufficiency Store will celebrate its 2-year anniversary on December 1, 2025, and partner with Program for Multicultural Health (PMCH) to support a final 2025 café, “Taste of a Strong Roots Parent Health Café”, on December 13, 2025. This health café is designed to help parents and caregivers strengthen sense of self and parenting skills.

Looking ahead, the Self-Sufficiency Store hopes to expand to Hollow Creek, another Ypsilanti Housing Commission community, through sustainable funding and partnerships. For more information or to support families served by the Self-Sufficiency Store please contact Angela Johnson at angejohn@umich.edu.

For this month, we’d like to spotlight one of our volunteers from CHS' Volunteer Services: Timothy Liang!

Since January 2023, volunteer Timothy has dedicated his time and talents to U-M Health, serving across inpatient and outpatient areas at University Hospital, C.S. Mott Children's Hospital, and the University of Michigan Health Frankel Cardiovascular Center. In addition to supporting patients and staff on the units, Timothy shares his musical gift as a pianist in the University Hospital lobby, performing for patients and families through the Gifts of Art Music While You Wait program. Over the past two and a half years, Timothy has generously contributed more than 440 volunteer hours.

“I am volunteering with Michigan Medicine because I love helping others and serving the community," Timothy shares. "From 6B General Medicine to Weekend Child Life at Mott, Volunteer Services offers amazing opportunities that support quality patient care and comfort. I’ve even been able to volunteer by playing piano with the Music While You Wait program! Over the past two and a half years, I have enjoyed serving patients and families, supporting nurses and staff, and contributing to a compassionate environment of healing. Volunteering has allowed me to positively impact lives and has contributed to my growth as a person. I am motivated to continue supporting others through dedication, compassion, and hope!”

Earlier this month, American Heart Association - Michigan's Ann Arbor Jackson Heart Ball brought together community leaders, volunteers and survivors, working together to raise funds and awareness to fight heart disease and stroke. The gala event showcased how research, discovery, advocacy and the knowledge to make an impact can change health outcomes for everyone, everywhere. At the event, the Cor Vitae Award for Community Service is given to an individual who enhances the quality of life for many and has played a significant role in advancing the mission of the American Heart Association.

The winner was Tony Denton, the Senior Vice President and Chief Environmental, Social, and Governance Officer, U-M Health, Michigan Medicine; driving bold initiatives in sustainability, health equity, and community engagement. He recently led the charge for the $30 million Ypsilanti Health Center initiative —a comprehensive healthcare facility ranging from adult services and cardiology to pediatrics and behavioral health.

Congratulations Tony on your unwavering commitment to community and exemplification of meeting people where they are!
