Dispo / lifestyle brand leaving town, laying off hundreds of people, and selling off its assets to some other private equity owned chain?

Biscuits🍪 isn’t the first, and they won’t be the last.

2025 is plainly showing the inevitable consequences of years of corporate foolery in Michigan’s cannabis market. Especially here in Ann Arbor.

In July we lost an OG shop that’s been a fixture of cannabis culture since Day 1 legalization. We are wishing all our best to the Arbors Wellness family. That adds to the losses of other Ann Arbor legends like OM of Medicine and Greenstone/Liberty Cannabis. Other independents, including our friends at Meds Cafe, have also closed Ann Arbor locations recently.

Ironically, corporate brands (and/or their creditors 💳💸) are feeling the pain just like the mom-and-pop stores and caregivers they’ve either pushed out of business or pushed to the brink.

Regardless of how we feel about the impact of corporate brands on cannabis sustainability and quality in Michigan, unemployment sucks and we regret the job less their closures bring.

If you worked at or shopped at Biscuits🍪 or any other struggling corporate shop, our team would love an opportunity to chop it up with you and earn your loyalty.

Steps along the sacred path to rosin...

1. Start with natural, whole plant, fresh-frozen flower.

2. Bathed in ultra pure RO water and ice, the ripe resin heads are gently washed from the flower. Resin heads (trichomes) hold all of the plant’s flavor and character. Just like a grape or fruit from a tree, trichomes have different sizes and ripenesses.

3. We collect the different dimensions of ripeness in mesh filter bags and scoop them onto trays for freeze drying.

4. After drying, we sift the resin and press it through filtered bags to create Rosin. Just like making apple cider, we are juicing the resin heads with a multi-ton press.

5. After curing, the terpenes separate from the cannabinoids and are whipped back together before final jarring and consuming.

It never gets old!

We interrupt your regularly scheduled programming to bring you this important tribute 🫡 to
 
Opening and operating one of the few microbusiness in Michigan is a rollercoaster of uncertainty, learning, and long hours. No one has been a steadier partner on this ride, more important to Winewood, and more comfortable rolling with the punches, than Marcus.
 
Marcus and I met in Minnesota in 2004 when he participated in a 🇩🇪 🤝 🇺🇸 high-school exchange program. We kept up on Facebook through the years, sharing life updates and tips about growing. In 2019, he and his wife .hbr1 road-tripped across America. That’s when we reconnected to discuss the vague idea of opening the microbusiness. Four months later, Marcus and Sabrina left their lives and professions in Switzerland behind to move to Ann Arbor to help build Winewood… ziegel für ziegel 🧱.
 
It takes a special kind of person to welcome risk and adapt to all types of novel challenges (from dispensary construction, harvesting, metrc-ing, trimming, hash-making, the list goes on…) without twitching an eye. A German person, maybe… And when you pair those skills and flexibility with his love for banter and cannabis, you can see how difficult it will be to fill his shoes!
