💚Born with biliary atresia, Nora Fuchs spent the first year of her life receiving therapies at Mott to help her liver function. However, a few months after turning one, it became clear these therapies wouldn't be sustainable long-term.

Her best chance at a healthy liver would be through a liver transplant.

When a non-directed living donor became a match for Nora, she was able to receive that second chance at life.

💛 A simple drawing created during a hospital group activity is now helping support the lifesaving work of Survival Flight. This year’s annual Survival Flight t-shirt fundraiser features artwork designed by a young patient at C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital.

Proceeds from t-shirt sales support University of Michigan - Survival Flight team members by funding education equipment and training, helping flight nurses and staff stay at the forefront of critical care transport.

Is there a "cliff effect" in physical activity after high school?

Younger children and teens often have built-in opportunities to stay active through gym class, sports and extracurricular activities.

But as they get older, those structured options may disappear.

And many young adults struggle to stay active during this transition, our new Mott Poll suggests. 1 in 3 parents say their young adult child doesn't get enough physical activity.

Top barriers: Time, screen use and lack of interest.

Meet JJ one of our Little Victors from our 2026 calendar. “After a week-long hospital stay at birth, doctors suspected JJ had hereditary spherocytosis. At 6 weeks old, he received his official diagnosis and his first blood transfusion. In his first 27 months of life, he had 11 transfusions, two coming during a hospital stay due to an unknown viral illness. He's had hundreds of pokes, takes daily medicine and is well-known at the local lab. We have to take many precautions to keep his hemoglobin levels up and avoid transfusion. He recently started preschool, and we have spent many hours practicing good handwashing to keep him healthy. JJ will battle this blood disorder his whole life, but with the help of hematology at Mott, he is thriving, and we hope he continues to do so. He is our hero.” Hail, JJ!

Meet Silas one of our Little Victors from our 2026 calendar. “Silas has trisomy 21, congenital heart disease, autism, and B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (B-ALL). Mott is our second home. This is where he was born, had three heart surgeries, many sick admissions, sees all his specialists, and since April 2024 began his battle with leukemia. He is always so brave and delightful even in the hardest times. Always a joy to be around for everyone.” Hail, Silas!

Elijah Dottery, now 10, was diagnosed with sickle cell anemia at birth.

His family eventually transferred to U-M for Elijah's care, where he received a bone marrow transplant donated by his mother.

Elijah was also the first U-M patient to receive mesenchymal stem cell therapy after FDA approval. He completed his final stem cell therapy in January 2026 and his health has continued to improve.

Meet Isaac one of our Little Victors from our 2026 calendar. “Isaac was born with a rare liver disease called ornithine transcarbamylase (OTC) deficiency. He received his first life saving liver transplant at just 4 months old. After experiencing chronic rejection, Isaac became critically ill and went into liver failure, receiving a second life saving transplant at 21 months old. He spent 65 days in the hospital recovering and has already faced rejection again, but continues to fight with incredible strength. We are so grateful for the team at Mott, especially Dr. Meredith Barrett and Dr. Victoria Shakhin, for the care that has carried him through. Isaac recently celebrated his second birthday. While his journey is far from over, he continues to fight with strength and resilience every day. ”

April is Donate Life Month. Stories like Isaac's are a powerful reminder of the impact of this incredible gift. Hail, Isaac!

Phil Consiglio and Quinnlyn Smith share the special bond of living liver donation. Thanks to Consiglio's decision to donate part of his liver after donating a kidney, Smith has a second chance at life and is thriving.

WDIV Local 4 / ClickOnDetroit shares more about their story this .

When you look up “giver” in the dictionary, there should be a picture of Phil Consiglio. Each year, just .002 percent of the U.S. population will become a living organ donor. Consiglio is now part of an even more exclusive club of people who have donated twice -- both times to a stranger.

04/01/2026

DUAL ORGAN DONATION: Phil Consiglio, a registered nurse at C.S. Mott is part of a small group of dual living organ donors.

Having donated a kidney and part of his liver, Consiglio feels the choice to become a living organ donor was one of the easiest decisions he ever made.

Today, Donate Life Month kicks off with Living Donor Day to celebrate those who have made the choice to donate an organ to someone in need.

Later this month, Consiglio and Meredith Barrett, M.D.' s full interview about kidney and liver organ donation will be live on our YouTube channel in celebration of .
