Happy Child Life Month! ✨🧸

Today we spotlight Recreation Therapy and Activity Coordinators at Mott.

Recreation therapists use purposeful, evidence-based leisure activities to support patients’ physical, emotional, cognitive, and social wellbeing while building coping skills, independence, and connection. Because play is not a break from care. It is part of it.

Activity Coordinators create opportunities for engagement through bedside play, crafts, group activities, and special events that promote positive coping and social connection for patients and families during hospitalization.

We’re so grateful for the expertise and compassion they bring to our Little Victors every day. Hail! Learn more about Child and Family Life and how to support at https://michmed.org/CFLMonth.

Meet Emerson one of our Little Victors from our 2026 calendar. “Emerson was born at 27 weeks at Mott as a twin, and unfortunately her twin passed away. Emmy thrived and stayed in the NICU for 110 days. She has cerebral palsy and underwent a big surgery called selective dorsal rhizotomy (SDR) last November and had a 4 week stay at Mott. She uses a wheelchair to get around. Mott Children’s Hospital has been life-changing for us and they have been amazing for the care of Emerson.” Hail, Emerson!

💛💙 When it comes to pediatric liver transplants, timing is crucial.

The U-M Health C.S. Mott Pediatric Liver Transplant Team is proud to announce that our pediatric liver transplant list is empty and all children that were on the waitlist have received a liver!

"At Mott, we have a much shorter wait time for patients compared to the national average," said Jacob Bilhartz, M.D.

"This is due to many factors, including our willingness to use technical variant grafts and our robust living donor program allowing patients to be transplanted faster giving them a better chance for positive outcomes," said Meredith Barrett, M.D.

Hail, to all of our liver transplant patients and their families and to our Mott Pediatric Liver Transplant Team!

Meet Clara one of our Little Victors from our 2026 calendar. “Clara was born with her kidneys fused together, and the total functionality of both kidneys is about 20% of one healthy kidney. During her second week in the NICU, her care team informed us she would need dialysis and a transplant within her first few years of life. Clara also has some combinations of her colorectal and reproductive organs. In her nine months of life, she’s already had five surgeries, one of which included placing her peritoneal dialysis catheter, colostomy and gastrostomy tube. At five months old, the nephrology team decided it was time to start dialysis. Clara is a champ, as she does dialysis every night for 10 hours. Despite all of the countless stays and appointments at Mott, Clara remains the happiest little baby girl.” Hail, Clara!

From the moment Nora was born, her family knew they needed answers.

Like her father and older brother, Nora couldn’t fully open her eyes at birth.

The family turned to whole genome sequencing through the pediatric genetics team at C.S. Mott Children's Hospital.

The results confirmed BPES Type 2, a rare diagnosis that brought long-awaited clarity and a roadmap for Nora’s future health.

“I cried. It was pure relief,” her mom said. “Getting the answer felt like a gift. The hardest part was living in the unknown.”

Two heartbeats. One future. ❤️

Pregnancy doesn’t just shape a baby’s health.

It can shape a mother’s heart health for decades.

Cardiovascular disease is the No. 1 cause of death in women. Complications like preeclampsia and hypertension during pregnancy can significantly increase long-term heart risk.

At Michigan Medicine, researchers like Dr. Ashley Hesson, of the U-M Health Cardio-Obstetrics Program, are leading new studies focused on protecting women’s hearts during and after pregnancy.

"Your heartbeat matters just as much as your baby’s," Hesson says.
