Kim Hartman, a talented artist and Type 1 diabetes patient, has always expressed herself through her vibrant paintings and intricate sketches.

Since her diagnosis of Type 1 diabetes as a young adult, Hartman had spent years managing the condition’s daily challenges. Still, the thought of developing diabetic retinal disease was her worst nightmare.

With the help of Dr. Thomas Gardner, Hartman has been able to preserve her vision.

Linda Corbett started noticing that she was unable to see clearly due to cataracts. When she went in for surgery, Kellogg also offered to correct her myopia, or nearsightedness, which she had for most of her life.

Now she spends her time writing, reading, watching films, spending time with her family and friends and enjoying the clarity of her vision.

It started out as a collection of unusual symptoms, including childhood glaucoma, skin rashes, arthritis and spontaneous tendon rupture. Soon, it became a collaborative effort between the Gibson family, doctors, researchers and the NIH to understand a rare type of genetic glaucoma.

A large group of researchers, led by University of Michigan and partnering with University of Missouri, have now received an NIH grant to better understand the disease, its interactions with viral infections, and to develop therapies.

About 20 million U.S. adults are living with some form of age-related macular degeneration. Current treatments slow the disease, but none restore vision.

U-M researchers used retinal pigment epithelial stem cells derived from adult postmortem eye tissue in a phase 1/2a clinical trial. The treatment was safe and the participants experienced improved vision in the transplanted eye, hinting that the approach could provide a new therapeutic avenue.
