Wait for it:
You bump into another parent at the grocery store, gym, church, etc. and the dreaded question arises…
“What are you doing for the holidays?”
Believe it or not, this seemingly innocuous question can send those of us facing difficult family transitions completely reeling. Spiraling.
Nosediving.
True story 😟
When families separate, divorce or suffer a traumatic loss, the grief for what was - and what will no longer be - can feel overwhelming.
What should we say? The truth?!? Well, buckle up because it might sound something like this:
“Oh, I’m going to cry in my closet while my ex-husband and his new wife watch my children open their gifts on Christmas morning. How about you?”
So instead, we hide. Deflect. Change the subject. Avoid social media. Hope no one asks.
We white-knuckle through the pain until the calendar reads January 2nd and we can finally unclench.
