Today I went to GSA (Gay-Straight Alliance) club today and, since Coming Out Day is coming up, people were sharing their stories of coming out to their families about their identities. Most of the stories were negative— children were called disgusting by their parents, one person was almost thrown out of their house, another was told by her mother that she hoped she would die before she saw her daughter marry a woman.

It was ignorance that made these parents act this way, they did not understand that there is nothing bad or wrong with being gay or bisexual or transgender, or mentally or physically disabled, for that matter. It is time for the ignorance to end and for us to simply love each other.

This is the day I offer ideas for how to be thoughtful and kind to other people.

If you see your friend looking down or even simply low on energy, try offering them a hug. Hugs reduce stress, cause your brain to produce oxytocin (a chemical that reduces blood pressure and is associated with happiness,) and can communicate feelings like “I’m here for you” and “I care about your happiness.”
