VFW Post 304 will be laying a memorial wreath at 1255 today at the WWII Memorial in Annapolis, commemorating the 84th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor. We must never forget the tragedy and sacrifices of that day. We also must take the lessons of that day to heart and always remain vigilant against elements who would do harm to our nation and our way of life!

It is very important that Veterans and their families take an active role in supporting legislation that protects Veteran rights and benefits. Joining the VFW Action Corps is a great way to keep abreast of current issues and legislative efforts. If we don't stand up for ourselves, Congress will continue to feel that cutting benefits from Veterans is an easy way to shift money to their pet projects.

Join the Action Corps today!

The House Veterans’ Affairs Committee will convene a hearing on veterans’ benefits, and the VFW will be in the room. Kristina Keenan will testify to defend earned benefits, support families, and push back against proposals that shift costs onto disabled veterans.

Happy Veterans Day to all our Veteran Brothers and Sisters! We are thankful for your service to our Nation. The status of "Veteran" crosses all boundaries. We are unified in service and we are an example of what can be achieved, if we stand together in support of the common good.

Today is also Remembrance Day - so take a moment to think of all those who have gone before us - who have laid the foundations of who we are today. We are thankful for their service and their sacrifices.

Post 304 had a great week out at the Anne Arundel County Fair! We really enjoyed engaging with the community, talking about the VFW and our Legislative efforts, distributing Poppies and recruiting some new members for the VFW and Auxiliary! Thanks to all the Post members who came out to help with the booth and thanks to the organizers for such a well-run Fair.

Yesterday, Post 304 did its VFW Day of Service event, cleaning neglected Veteran graves at St. Anne's Cedar Bluff cemetery in Annapolis. This event exemplifies the tenet of "Perpetuating the memory and history of our Dead", from the VFW Congressional Charter. We had a great time and we learned something about the history of our Veterans from the Annapolis area!

I want to thank our excellent Post and Auxiliary members (and their family members) for coming out and helping with this project. I'd also like to thank Denise Robinson, whose research work with her Legacy of Honor Project was the inspiration for this project - and I'd like to thank Ginger DeLuca, the lead caretaker at the Cemetery for her warm welcome and her assistance. Finally, I'd like to thank Delegate Dylan Behler for coming out and pitching in with us - we appreciate you taking time out of your busy schedule to help us honor Veterans, who may not have anyone left to help care for their graves.

Did you know that there is a Medal of Honor recipient buried in Cedar Bluff? CPL Hugh Purvis (USMC) was awarded the MoH for his actions in the 1871 Korean Campaign. The Citation reads: "Under enemy fire, CPL (then Private) Purvis was the first to scale the walls of the enemy fort and he captured the Korean flag". Were you even aware we had a conflict with Korea in 1871??
