Reductions to funding may impact dedicated hours, wages for self directed staff, and the flexibility individuals need to receive personalized support.

These services are not optional. They are essential for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities to live meaningful lives in their communities.

Recently, individuals supported by Bay-CSS had the opportunity to help deliver meals through Meals on Wheels. It was a chance to connect with neighbors, lend a helping hand, and be part of something meaningful.

Spirit Club provides adaptive fitness opportunities designed for people of all abilities. Participants build strength, confidence, and friendships while having fun and supporting one another.

Sometimes the simplest activities create the strongest connections.

During a recent activity, individuals and staff participated in a "string appreciation web." Each person held a piece of yarn and shared something they appreciated about someone else in the group. As the string passed from person to person, it created a beautiful web showing how connected we all are.

Moments like these remind us that community is built through kindness, encouragement, and recognizing the value in one another.

Bay Community Support Services is proud to have submitted written testimony to the Maryland General Assembly opposing the proposed cuts to the Developmental Disabilities Administration budget.

These proposed changes include reductions to dedicated hours, lowered self directed wages, and a $500,000 cap on individual budgets. In total, the cuts amount to $155.4 million in state funds and $310.8 million overall.

These are not just numbers.

For the individuals and families we serve across Southern Maryland and Anne Arundel County, these reductions would mean fewer flexible supports, fewer individualized options, and greater barriers for people with higher support needs.

They make it harder for people to live meaningful, independent lives in their own communities.

At Bay-CSS, we see every day what these services make possible — employment, independence, stability, and dignity. We also understand exactly what is at risk if these cuts move forward.

Our Bay-CSS clients had another unforgettable experience with Lucky and Blessed Fishing, diving into the world of wildlife and the Chesapeake Bay ecosystem.

There were antlers to examine, pelts to touch, coloring pages to fill with bright creativity — and plenty of laughter along the way. The best part? Everyone was included. Everyone participated. Everyone belonged.

Good leadership pours into the people who pour into others.

Our Board President, Ike, recently surprised our DSP team with custom cups as a thank you for their hard work and dedication. Even better, he handed them out personally.

It was a small moment with a big message: You matter.

At Bay-CSS, our DSPs are the heart of everything we do. We are grateful for leadership that recognizes that and shows up in person to say it.
