One of the most common things patients say to me is:

“I didn’t think it was bad enough to get checked.”

And I get it. Life’s busy. Pain comes and goes. You figure you’ll deal with it later.

But here’s what I see on my side:

Roads are slick today — drive like your spine depends on it.
Because it does.

Winter weather + sudden stops = whiplash, low back strain, and a whole lot of preventable injuries.
A few reminders:

Slow down. Ice wins every time.
Leave extra space. One bad brake and you’re in someone’s trunk.
Avoid sudden turns. Your tires won’t bite.
Keep your shoulders relaxed. Tension makes whiplash worse if something happens.
If you do get hit (even lightly), get checked. Symptoms often show up hours or days later.

Stay safe out there. Minnesota roads aren’t playing nice today.

Sitting, lifting, winter shoveling, work stress — it all lands in the same spot: your lumbar spine.

Most back injuries and winter heart attacks happen the same way — BAD shoveling technique.
Here’s how to shovel without wrecking your spine or stressing your heart:

1. Warm up for 2 minutes.
March in place, hip hinges, arm circles. Cold muscles tear fast.

2. Use a smaller shovel.
Bigger shovel = heavier load = back strain. Don’t be a hero.

3. Push the snow. Don’t lift it.
Your spine hates twisting with weight. Push in straight lines. If you must lift, keep the shovel close to your body.

4. Bend at your hips, not your waist.
Hinge. Don’t fold. Your glutes should do the work, not your discs.

5. Pace yourself — heart attacks spike during shoveling.
Take breaks every 10 minutes. If you’re getting chest tightness, shortness of breath that’s unusual for you, or nausea, stop immediately.

6. Stay hydrated.
Cold tricks you into thinking you don’t need water. You do.

7. Salt early.
Ice makes you slip. Slips cause disc herniations. Easy prevention.

8. Stop if your back “twinges.”
Sharp or sudden pain means you pushed too far. Don’t power through it.
