One of the most frustrating things for my clients, particularly my female clients is scale fluctuations. I get it, it’s frustrating as heck.
Here’s the deal, there are a million reasons the scale can go up and down throughout the month and barring that you have no underlaying health conditions and your adherence to your allotted macros is spot on - it’s likely NOT fat gain, but instead that pesky water weight. Reasons for water weight fluctuations…. #1 our cycle. During our period our insides are incredibly inflamed and hold onto more water. Same goes for ovulation. #2 too high sodium - the body has to keep its sodium to water ratio balanced to function properly - so will hold onto water if too much sodium is consumed. #3 too high fiber - suddenly or drastically increasing your fiber intake without consuming the proper amount of water can make you feel constipated and bloated. This will make the scale go up. #4 poor sleep - poor sleep can lower your metabolism, making it harder to lose weight. It also causes stress on your body. - stress causes hormonal changes that can increase blood sugar levels and blood insulin levels - this causes you to crave foods high in calories, fat, and sugars.
Bottom line - put more stock in how you feel, the progress you’ve made, the steps you’re taking daily towards your goals than a number on the scale. Stick to the process and trust in it. And as always, see your primary care physician if you just feel like something is “off”. A simple blood panel can tell a lot.
