🐕 Dystocia: When Birth Becomes an ER Visit

Sometimes, giving birth isn’t straightforward. Dystocia is a difficult labor that can put both mom and babies in danger. Many cases require emergency surgery to help save the mom and babies.

Spaying means: no pregnancies, no dystocia, (and hopefully) no emergency.

Next in our series: Mammary Cancer - a hidden risk that prevention can avoid. ♥️

🐾 Pyometra: A Hidden Emergency

In unspayed pets, the uterus can fill with a life-threatening infection that causes a pus-filled uterus. This is called a pyometra.

Early signs are subtle, (lethargy, increased drinking, mild vomiting), but it can turn deadly fast. Emergency surgery is often the only option to correct a pyometra.

Spay your pet, and this scary emergency is much less likely to happen.

Stay with us! Next up: Dystocia, a birth emergency you don’t want to face. ♥️

February is Spay and Neuter Awareness Month, and from the emergency room side of veterinary medicine, we see firsthand why this conversation matters.

Regularly, we treat preventable emergencies tied directly to pets that are not spayed or neutered, including life threatening infections like pyometra, difficult and dangerous births (dystocia), and certain reproductive cancers. These situations are often urgent, emotionally overwhelming, and far more costly than a routine procedure.

This month, we will be sharing a short series that takes a closer look at these conditions that will include what they are, how they happen, and how spaying or neutering can help protect your pet from ever experiencing them.

Our goal isn't judgement - it is education and prevention. We want to help you make informed decisions and keep your pets safe, healthy, and out of the ER whenever possible.

Stay tuned for our upcoming posts as we break down:
Pyometra
Dystocia
Reproductive cancers

Chocolate is a delicious treat for humans but can be toxic to dogs. The darker the chocolate, the higher the risk.

Chocolate contains theobromine (which comes from the cacao plant) and caffeine. While these substances are usually perfectly safe for people, dogs metabolize them much more slowly, which can put them at risk. Theobromine and caffeine can act as a diuretic, which can quickly lead to dehydration. They can also cause stimulation of the central nervous system and heart.

Common symptoms of chocolate ingestion include:
- Vomiting
- Diarrhea
- Increased thirst and urination
- Restlessness
- Fast breathing

If your dog has ingested chocolate, prompt action is essential for their safety. Contact us immediately for advice and care. Let’s keep our pets safe together! 🐶🍫
