Fritz is still nursing and he could potentially continue for another couple of months. Hippo calves on average nurse about 8-12 months, but just like with humans he could potentially nurse for as long as Bibi allows him to. He has been very interested in produce for months now, and eating it any chance he gets since about December. He began really liking his grain early this year and has recently had an increase in his daily amount, so he gets 1.4 lbs a day, half in the morning and half in the evenings just like the adults.

How much time are you spending on planning your birth and the first few days and weeks with your baby?

In my experience, most people (myself included!) don't put the same time and energy into planning for and learning about birth...and a lot of people I talk to say they regret that.

Hiring a birth doula is almost like hiring a wedding planner.

We're experts on the local resources.
We're not here to tell you how to have the best birth. We're here to help you create the birth you've been imagining and dreaming about.
We don't replace your partner. A wedding planner doesn't take over for your family members. Same goes for a birth doula - we help family members find ways to be helpful and involved when you want them to be.

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) has this to say about birth doula support:

"Published data indicate that one of the most effective tools to improve labor and delivery outcomes is the continuous presence of support personnel, such as a doula. Given that there are no associated measurable harms, this resource is probably underutilized."

A favorite part of my job as a birth doula is to show partners how to offer hands-on support to you during labor.

They always want to help, but they're not quite sure what to do!

As your birth doula, I'll offer tips and tricks that your partner can try to provide hands-on support to you throughout labor.

It's never my intention to take over.

It's my job to help partners be involved even more.

I seriously can not count how many times I’ve been asked… what the difference is between a doula and a midwife.

A midwife is a medical professional who actually delivers your baby. Midwives also provide medical care throughout pregnancy as well.

A birth doula is a non-medical professional who provides physical, educational and informational support throughout pregnancy, labor, birth and immediately afterwards. As your birth doula I will teach you and your partner techniques to help aid during your labor. Don’t have a partner? That’s okay, that’s what I’m here for as well. I take on many roles as a doula and I am happy to do so.
