Unfortunately Nate and I have been feeling under the weather lately (COVID negative) and were not able to attend the concert last night. Our banner, however, was still displayed and our brochures were laid out on a small table. If you are interested in having a brochure mailed to you, shoot me a message and I will be more than happy to send you one.

The weather has been beautiful, the birds have been singing and the ticks have been crawling. When I worked in the Emergency Department some years ago, it wasn't uncommon to have a patient come in for tick removal. Unfortunately, Emergency Department visits as well as Urgent care visits can be pricey and can mean a long wait in the waiting room. Instead of sitting in a waiting room waiting for an expensive tick removal, call Nurse Nate. My husband will conveniently go right to your door and I can guarantee that calling him would be the more cost effective option. If you are concerned about Lyme Disease, you can call your provider and ask about receiving a prescription for an antibiotic. We are here for you as a high quality, cost effective and convenient option.

Nurse Nate's Services is sponsoring one of Neenah Community Band's summer concerts. Not only do we value the role that good music plays in good health, but Nathan is also playing his euphonium in the band. Come and watch on Tuesday, June 7th, 7pm at Riverside park in Neenah. The music will be most enjoyable and as a bonus you will be able to hear Nate spend a couple of minutes highlighting what we do at Nurse Nate's Services.

Spend a moment today to remember those who gave their lives defending our freedoms, pray for those who are serving in the military and thank a veteran. If you know a Hmong veteran who fought along side our American soldiers in the Vietnam war, be sure to shake his hand and thank him for his service too.

Happy rainy May! Nate is busy visiting his morning clients. Last night he told me that a client of ours could use some cares on Sunday, a day that we usually take off. We agreed that our client's well being is more important than an uninterrupted day off of work. That is something else that I love about our small business; We have the flexibility to offer care when it is needed and we can do this even on our day off.

According to WHO, an average of 5.6% of Americans are anemic (low iron in their blood). Iron is what gives our blood it'd red color and it is what gives our blood the ability to carry oxygen. When we are low on iron we experience uncomfortable symptoms like fatigue, weakness, shortness of breath, dizziness and we tend to look pale. If you are ever experiencing anemia and decide to treat it by taking an iron supplement, here's an important tip: Swallow your iron pill down with a glass of orange juice or other beverage that is rich in vitamin C. On its own, iron has a tendency to form into an iron compound that our bodies are unable to absorb. Vitamin C prevents that formation.
About a year an a half ago I was very anemic. My provider told me to take 2 iron pills every day. At the time I forgot about the importance of coupling it with vitamin C. Thankfully a friend of mine, who is also a nurse, reminded me. By the time my iron levels were rechecked my anemia was much improved. My provider was pleasantly surprised to see this result and truthfully, so was I.

Here's the "Nurse Nate-mobile". Honk and wave "HI!" when you see it around town!
Someone who works for an insurance company recently took our information so that he can refer clients to us when their needs are not covered by their insurance plan. That is just one more thing that I love about our a small, independent local business: we don't have to turn people down in their time of need.

Arrangements have been made for Nate to assist someone who will be visiting Wisconsin from a different State. When Nate and I first made an outline for this business Nate made a good observation: Why can't someone with disabilities travel and attend those special events that are important to them too? That's why on our website we have "Skilled Nurse Accompaniment" listed as one of our services. This person who will be traveling to WI normally resides in a nursing home and has physical limitations. Nate will be accompanying and providing a way for his new friend to be able to safely attend this event while maintaining dignity.

What is a lipid? That's just medical jargon for cholesterol and fat. Maybe you have been cautioned before to avoid eating unhealthy foods that are high in cholesterol. Maybe you have also been told that Cholesterol can lead to heart disease. But have you ever heard that it is possible to NOT have enough cholesterol in your body? This is called hypolipidemia (as apposed to hyperlipidemia). Hypolipidemia is associated with malnutrition. Like anything else in our bodies, lipids have to be in the right balance for us to be at our best health. Lipids are needed for energy storage, insulation, protection and absorption of certain vitamins. Unfortunately, lipids can also make food taste really good which means it can be easy for us to eat too much of it. What happens when our lipid levels are too high? They clog your blood vessels which is bad because every area of your body needs to be nourished with all the wonderful things that your blood carries. Typically heart health is mentioned when lipids are talked about because a starving heart muscle can mean death, but it is also important to remember that every part of your body needs clear blood vessels and good blood flow. blocked up blood vessels can affect everything from the discs in your back to your hormone secreting glands.
Thankfully there are many diets to choose from that can help us to consistently limit how many lipid rich foods we indulge in. Find one that suits you best and then stick with it. Maybe exploring myplate.com could be a good first step for you? A word of advice though, don't set yourself up for frustration and failure; don't just restrict and remove foods from your diet. Be sure to add a good variety of foods too! This may mean experimenting with new recipes and new flavors.
Lastly, be sure to move more. Remember how I mentioned that lipids are involved in energy storage? Use up some of your lipid/energy stores by doing something active that you enjoy. Remember, even table tennis involves more movement than t.v. watching. Good luck on your "lipid journey"!

Nate and I renewed our CPR licenses last Saturday which required that we both pass a written exam and a skills test. Knowing how to perform CPR is so important, even for people who don't work in healthcare. If you don't know how to perform CPR I would like to encourage you to learn because you just never know when and where someone will be experiencing cardiac arrest. You can help increase that person's chance of survival by correctly implementing hands only CPR or by knowing what a defibrillator looks like and fetching it for the other person who has already started chest compressions. The Fox Valley Technical College offers a one day class on CPR for non-healthcare individuals. (I will link below.) Also... a side benefit of taking a CPR class is that performing chest compressions on a manikin is a really good workout 😉.
Completely unrelated to CPR but a helpful health tip nonetheless, Have you ever had an ingrown toenail? would you like to know how to avoid those? When you trim your toe nails, especially your big toenails, soak them in water first to soften and then clip them straight across as apposed to rounding the edges. It's the rounded edges that have the tendency to develop into those pesky ingrown toenails.

Learn important life-saving skills with one of our CPR or first aid classes.
