Gustave Mark Gilbert (1911–1977) was an American psychologist and army officer who served as the prison psychologist during the Nuremberg trials (1945–1946). He interviewed high-ranking N**i leaders, including Hermann Göring, conducting intelligence and Rorschach tests to assess their mental health and provide insight into the N**i mind.

Gilbert documented his daily interviews and conversations with N**i leaders, publishing them in his 1947 book, Nuremberg Diary. He sought to understand the "psychopathology of N**i leaders," observing their motivations and actions.

Fluent in German, Gilbert was able to speak directly with prisoners. He conducted tests and often asked for written essays from prisoners, including Rudolf Hess and Hans Frank. His work led to the 1950 publication, The Psychology of Dictatorship.

His assignment was to keep the prisoners calm and rational while evaluating their mental state and capacity for remorse. Gilbert's work at Nuremberg was considered crucial in providing a psychological perspective on the perpetrators of the Holocaust.

Gilbert's View of Evil - Gilbert arrived at a concise definition of evil based on his observations: a total lack of empathy. He believed this void allowed them to commit mass atrocities without a shattered conscience or feelings of guilt.

Dehumanization of Victims - Gilbert noted that N**i leaders often viewed their victims as "subhuman," which functioned as a psychological barrier preventing empathy from ever forming.

For example, he observed that Rudolf Höss, the commandant of Auschwitz, felt no empathy for his victims because he viewed them solely through a lens of "efficient extermination".

Gilbert's Nuremberg Diary (1947) highlighted a disturbing contrast: many defendants were seemingly "good" fathers and husbands in their personal lives, yet they could orchestrate gas chamber killings without remorse.

This speaks to the understanding that certain places in nature act as thresholds, inviting you into deeper presence and alignment. Crossing into these spaces quiets the mind, softens the body, and reconnects you with the living world that holds and restores you.

Text on Image: “When you cross the threshold into the trees and the world falls away, your spirit remembers where it truly belongs. In that shift, the forest becomes a sanctuary, a place where your breath settles and your inner world grows spacious again. Everything else can wait while you return to yourself.
