Per the Hemophilia Foundation Australia: The Getting Older presentation at the Australian Bleeding Disorders Conference asked the question, ‘What now? I’m still here’. Chaired by Dr Liane Khoo, it explored how to navigate ageing with a bleeding disorder, including cardiovascular issues, HIV, hep C and liver health, and preparing for future needs, such as the impact of chronic joint damage.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Haemophilia is an inherited condition and runs in families. It is caused by a mutation or alteration in the gene making factor VIII ( 8 or factor IX (9).

🧬 This gene alteration is passed down from parent to child through generations. Men with haemophilia will pass the gene alteration on to their daughters but not their sons. Women who are carriers can pass the gene alteration on to their sons and daughters. Sons with the gene alteration will have haemophilia. Daughters with the gene alteration can have normal or reduced factor VIII or factor IX levels. Some will not have bleeding symptoms, while others can have symptoms and can have haemophilia.

👶 In about one third of people born with haemophilia, there is no history of the disorder in the family.

Did you know that hemophilia is a rare bleeding disorder that affects about 1 in 10,000 people?

Here are some key facts about this condition that can help you better understand it:
•Hemophilia is an inherited disorder that affects the blood’s ability to clot properly. People with hemophilia are missing or have low levels of certain clotting factors, which can cause them to bleed more easily than normal.
•There are two main types of hemophilia: hemophilia A and hemophilia B. Hemophilia A is the more common type, affecting about 80% of people with hemophilia. Hemophilia B affects about 20% of people with the condition.
•Symptoms of hemophilia can vary depending on the severity of the condition, but may include excessive bleeding from cuts or injuries, bleeding into joints or muscles, and prolonged bleeding after surgery or dental procedures.
• Hemophilia is typically diagnosed through a blood test that measures clotting factor levels. Treatment options may include clotting factor replacement therapy, which involves infusing clotting factors into the bloodstream to help stop bleeding, as well as other supportive measures such as pain management and physical therapy.

While there is no cure for hemophilia, advances in treatment options have greatly improved the outlook for people with the condition. With proper treatment and management, people with hemophilia can lead full and active lives.

Each March, the National Hemophilia Foundation (NHF) calls awareness to inheritable blood and bleeding disorders. Bleeding Disorders Awareness Month (BDAM) encourages patients and families with hemophilia, von Willebrand disease, and rare factor disorders to share their lives, stories, struggles, and successes.

These conditions are often misunderstood and misdiagnosed. This causes problems later. Understanding that bleeding disorders are serious conditions that need early diagnosis is extremely important. With research and advancements, a cure can be found someday for many of these conditions.

During March, we encourage families and friends to donate a pint of blood to save a life.
