What if the behaviors we see aren’t problems to fix, but windows into a child’s experience? When we shift from treating deficits to supporting development, we create space for true acceptance, especially for autistic children and those with developmental differences. This paradigm shift means honoring different ways of being in the world, not pressuring anyone to conform.

Part 2: Finally, my brain told my hands to let go & throw the ball. Thank goodness for a loving daughter & patient PT and *brain plasticity*which allowed me to create new pathways around the damaged areas.

Now that I'm on the sunny side of my recovery, sharing an early slice of my traumatic brain injury (TBI). Notice my monotone voice & LITERALLY talking myself into throwing the ball back. What looks simple, requires so much complexity: planning, sequencing, ex*****on, adjusting.

Challenging behaviors are clues, not problems to fix. When we shift our focus from stopping behaviors to understanding what’s driving them, we open the door to real, lasting change rooted in compassion and connection.

As we anticipate the release of the second edition of Beyond Behaviors, I am reminded of the moment I decided to write the book.

As I prepare to launch the second edition of Beyond Behaviors, I find myself transported back to the moment I knew I had to write this book.

The second edition of Beyond Behaviors is here 💙

Years ago, I watched a child I was working with get sent to a "calm down room" — essentially isolated for behaviors that were really just his nervous system asking for help. That moment changed everything. It's why I wrote Beyond Behaviors, and it's why this book has resonated so deeply with parents, educators, and clinicians around the world, many crediting it for shifting the paradigm towards a new respect for neurodiversity.

This updated edition goes even deeper into what kids are really telling us through their behaviors. I've updated references, and created a brand new chapter answering your questions from the Beyond Behaviors community.

Because when we understand what's happening beneath the behavior, we can finally offer what kids need most: connection, safety, and co-regulation.
