One of the first times Scott and I have spoken in detail about my traumatic brain injury, coma and road back to recovery. I'm a living example of the power of brain plasticity, hope and the healing power of safety in relationships. Thank you Polyvagal Institute, Travis and Mac!

A letter to my younger self,
You're sitting there with your baby girls, wondering if you're doing this right. Spoiler: there's no "right" way, but here's what I wish I could tell you now.
Those three daughters you're raising? They're going to teach you more than any textbook ever could. The moments when you felt like you failed, when your own stress showed up in ways you didn't want, when you had to repair and reconnect - those were the foundation of everything you'd later teach others about being human with our children.
Trust yourself. Trust them. Trust the process.

"Dr. Mona Delahooke invites us to take a step back from the culturally and medically ingrained belief that children's outward actions are reliable windows into their inner intentions, or what they really mean and want based on their actions. Instead, she asks, nay implores, us to adopt a more biologically accurate, compassionate, and clinically effective lens from which to view each child"--Pediatrician Chris Magryta

Clinicians have been trained to observe, categorize, and intervene on behavior. But what if the framework we've inherited, one built on compliance, consequences, and behavioral modification, is fundamentally misaligned with how traumatized nervous systems actually work?

What if the behaviors we see aren’t problems to fix, but windows into a child’s experience? When we shift from treating deficits to supporting development, we create space for true acceptance, especially for autistic children and those with developmental differences. This paradigm shift means honoring different ways of being in the world, not pressuring anyone to conform.
