What Is Somatic Healing?

Talking helps us understand what happened.
But somatic healing helps the body release what it’s still holding.

Emotions like rage and grief are activating — they live in the muscles, jaw, chest, and breath. Others, like exhaustion and shutdown, need rest and safety before anything can move. Somatic work meets both.

Talking vs. releasing:
Talking engages the thinking brain.
Somatic practices engage the nervous system — using breath, movement, sound, stillness, and sensation to help the body complete stress responses it never got to finish.

🔥 Rage needs movement and expression.
😴 Rest needs safety and softness.
Both are necessary for healing.

Research in trauma-informed and nervous-system-based practices (including somatic psychology and polyvagal theory) shows that the body heals through felt experience, not explanation alone. Regulation happens when the body senses safety — not when it’s pushed, rushed, or told to “calm down.”

That’s why we offer spaces for rage and spaces for rest, along with plenty of options to slow down, soften, and pause. Some bodies need movement and expression. Others need stillness and quiet. Many need both — at different times.

What Is the Vagus Nerve?

The vagus nerve is the main communication pathway between your brain and your body. It runs from the brainstem down through the face, throat, chest, and into the abdomen — connecting to the heart, lungs, and digestive system.

Its job is to help your body shift out of fight-or-flight and into rest-and-digest — the state where you can breathe deeply, digest food, process emotion, and feel safe.

When the vagus nerve is supported, the nervous system becomes more resilient. When it’s overwhelmed, stress can linger in the body.

Simple ways to support your vagus nerve every day:

• hum or sing (even quietly)
• sigh slowly and intentionally
• take long, slow exhales
• gargle water in the morning
• place a hand on your chest while breathing
• gently stretch the neck and jaw
• spend quiet time in low-stimulation environments

These aren’t just calming habits — they’re biological signals of safety.
