🐥 Gettin’ that new chick itch? 🐥

Before adding to your flock, make sure you’ve considered a few key questions:

1. Is this the right chicken breed for me? You’ll have more fun with a breed suited to your goals and climate.

2. Are the chicks males or females? It is not easy to tell, so be sure to let your supplier know which one you’d like.

3. Are the chicks vaccinated? Many hatcheries vaccinate chicks before shipment. But if your chicks were not vaccinated or you’re not sure, you’ll need to protect them with a medicated feed.

4. What supplies do I need? The three essentials are warmth, water and feed. Your brooder will need a heat lamp or heating pad, fresh bedding, a feeder and a waterer. Chicks also need a starter-grower feed for the first 18 weeks. Look for Purina products with the Chick Strong® System to help ensure your chicks get the support needed consistent growth and development.

No need to worry this winter. Thanks to their thick coat of feathers, your ladies have built-in parkas. But if you want to keep their coop extra cozy, here are a few tips:

1. Use heated waterers if things freeze up.

2. Avoid drafts, but don’t completely seal the coop.

3. Keep bedding dry by spot-cleaning wet areas daily.

4. Skip the heat lamp. Most chickens can handle cold temps.

Shorter days = slower laying.

To keep egg production steady, you’ll need to provide at least 16 hours of light per day. A simple setup of one incandescent 25-watt or LED 3- to 9-watt bulb per 100 square feet of coop space on an automatic timer should do the trick. Remember to keep any cords out
of reach.

With cold weather approaching, make sure your chickens can handle the chill. They’ll eat more to stay warm, so stick with their complete layer feed and be prepared to refill feeders and waterers more often.
