Today is my birthday and I've been spending the morning in the kitchen....roasting pumpkin seeds, making my favorite granola, and finalizing the recipes for our next Blissful Living Academy event.

Yes, spending time in the kitchen is how I enjoy spending my birthday!

The holiday season is upon us and this festive season often brings extra commitments, joyful holiday events, dinners, travel and house guests. All may bring feelings of stress as well.

In culinary practices, there's a practice called "mise en place" or to set up.

There are 5 steps:

1. Planning: Before you begin, read the entire recipe to understand all the steps, ingredients, equipment and technique requirements.
2. Gathering: Collect all necessary cooking utensils, tools, equipment, and ingredients listed in the recipe.
3. Preparation: Wash, prepare (cut, chop, shred, etc) and measure all ingredients.
4. Organization: Arrange your prepared ingredients and tools in a logical order, typically in the sequence they will be used.
5. Ex*****on: Begin cooking!

With everything ready, you can focus on the cooking process itself and avoid having to stop to prep ingredients or find tools mid-task which can lead to issues, such as extending cooking time or burning, with the final dish.

Ever eat a bowl of Kitchari?

Kitchari is as old as Ayurveda. Documented in the Bhavaprakash, traditional Kitchari is a simple dish of cooking rice and dahl with a little salt, ginger and hing.

Over the centuries, Kitchari has gotten fancy with everyone having their own variety of the classic, adding ghee, spices, nuts, and vegetables. I’m no different and on October 12th, I’ll be sharing the secrets of how I make my Royal Kitchari.

Here are some things to know about this nourishing and versatile dish:

🍲 It is a nourishing dish that reduces vata and gives strength
🍲 It is heavy on the digestive system, leaving you feel full between meals
🍲 It can help curb cravings and an overactive appetite

Kitchari can be a great meal for transitioning into fall, a time of year when Vata (cold, dry and variable) is increasing. We may experience dry skin, variable digestion, sleeping troubles, cold hands and feet, changes in the mind’s stability and weight changes.

Royal Kitchari is one of my most requested dishes at retreats. Instead of waiting for the next retreat, I’m going to share my secrets to making your own perfect bowl!

It's Giving Tuesday - a day to extend your boons with organizations that help others. This is especially needed in Western North Carolina after Hurricane Helene. ​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​Healthy, whole food based meals can be a foundation for good health and healing. Beginning in November, I've been volunteering at least once a week at a few different organizations in WNC, all associated with preparing meals or providing food to those who struggle to put a healthy, home cooked meal on the table. πŸ₯˜

Some of these locations are taking me through some of the hardest hit areas and it's still hard to imagine how much destruction remains in the main streets. Turned over vehicles, collapsed building, fallen trees and debris piled about. Still, everyone is banning together to help, creating amazing gourmet meals in tiny kitchens and food trucks.

One organization that I've been spending more and more time with is ​Equal Plates ​. Founded during Covid, they focus on providing healthy, homemade meals to lower income and Medicaid recipients.

Since Hurricane Helene, they've gone from serving 1,200 meals a week to that many a DAY! And, this need doesn't show signs of slowing down.

During this season of thanks and gratitude, I'm reminded again of how fortunate we came out of this situation, allowing me to offer my gifts to others.

With the support of my community, I continue to offer hours of service each week and a sizable financial contribution to Equal Plates.

Working with fresh or frozen whole cranberries is not just easy, it's tasty and healthier too!

Fresh cranberries taste tart and sour, which helps activate your digestive juices, support your eyes, cardiovascular health and urinary tract. Also known as a power-packed antioxidants which protects our cells from damage by oxidative stress and free radicals, damage that can lead to serious conditions like cancer and heart disease.

Canned cranberries often have excess salt, sugars or preservatives added to the processing, which also means it lacks prana too.

After being a bodyworker and massage therapist for over a dozen years, I've experienced first-hand truth in this quote. ​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​Creating a place for someone to relax and reconnect with themselves through the sense of touch, you are not just touching their arm, leg or face, you are touching them on a subtle level as well. The level of healing, awakening and rest is profound.

In Ayurveda, the sense of touch is associated with the air element, Vata dosha and the intellect of prana - Marut.

Our skin is an entire network of prana receptors alongside the hair follicles, a Nadi (energy channel) called Loma Rhandra. Interconnected with our 72,000 Nadis, touch circulates Prana back to our heart center, the seat of our soul. Any gentle, loving form of touch will positively affect the physical, emotional and spiritual whole of ourselves.

Three forms of touch therapy, Sparsha Vigyan, in Ayurveda includes abhyanga, marma chikitsa and Kansa. Each of these therapies can be administered to yourself or enjoyed as a treatment in a spa or Ayurvedic center.

I've offered hundreds of these services in my years of owning an Ayurvedic Wellness Center and now I'm sharing these ancient services with you for yourself, your loved ones and clients.
