Pain changes how we think, behave, and relate to others.
In mental health education, we often talk about four common mindsets: the Villain, the Victim, the Hero, and the Guide.
The Villain mindset uses pain to push others away through anger, blame, or control.
The Victim mindset feels powerless and waits for someone else to fix things or take care of them.
The Hero mindset uses pain to help others, but still needs to be the one who “has it all together.”
The Guide mindset learns to heal, set boundaries, and walk beside others so they feel supported and not alone.
These are not labels; they’re patterns many people move in and out of, especially after trauma, loss, or prolonged stress.
When we name these patterns, we can:
*Notice them in ourselves and others.
*Explore where they came from.
*Choose healthier ways to respond instead of reacting.
Education like this reduces shame and opens the door to healing, growth, and healthier relationships.
If you’re curious about where you sit on this spectrum, a good therapist can help you explore it safely.
