There is nothing that makes your heart race faster than seeing your child with a fever.

Mandy Nunn, ER Manager at Exceptional Community Hospital, understands that fear. She has cared for countless families in our community and knows how quickly concern can set in when a child is not feeling well.

You check their forehead. You grab the thermometer. You start wondering. Is this normal? Or is this something more?

Most fevers are the body doing exactly what it is designed to do by fighting infection. But sometimes certain symptoms mean it is time to stop watching and start acting.

In this Exceptional Health Brief, Mandy walks through the warning signs every parent should know, especially for babies and young children, and explains which symptoms should never be ignored.
When it comes to your child, trust your instincts. You know when something does not feel right.

Exceptional Community Hospital is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and our Emergency Room is always here when your family needs us most.

Exceptional Health Brief: Norovirus & Stomach Illness

Stomach bugs can spread quickly in schools, households, and workplaces, and one of the most common causes is norovirus.

In this Exceptional Health Brief, Jennifer McCourt, Med-Surg Manager at Exceptional Community Hospital, explains how norovirus spreads, what symptoms to watch for, and when dehydration can become serious, especially for young children and older adults.

Symptoms often begin suddenly and may include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach cramps, and sometimes fever or body aches. While most people improve within one to three days, warning signs such as dizziness, dry mouth, low urine output, or difficulty keeping fluids down should not be ignored.

Jennifer also shares important prevention tips, including proper handwashing with soap and water, disinfecting high-touch surfaces, and staying home for at least 48 hours after symptoms stop.

If symptoms become severe or dehydration is a concern, our hospital team is here to provide the monitoring and care you or your loved one may need.

🩺 Exceptional Health Brief: Cold Air & Respiratory Health

Although we’re getting a brief taste of spring-like weather, winter conditions are not behind us yet. Fluctuating temperatures and cold air exposure can still impact respiratory health, especially during cooler mornings, evenings, and overnight hours.

In this Exceptional Health Brief, Dr. Nate Claver, Medical Director at Exceptional Community Hospital, explains why cold, dry air can irritate the airways and how a simple step, such as wearing a scarf over your mouth and nose outdoors, can help warm and humidify the air before it reaches your lungs.

Dr. Claver also discusses symptoms that may indicate a more serious condition, including wheezing, shortness of breath, chest tightness, or a cough that disrupts sleep. These symptoms should not be ignored, especially if they persist or worsen.

If something doesn’t feel right, trust your instincts. Our team is here day and night to provide emergency care for you and your family.
