Formosa Wellness - Lisa King, LPC

Formosa Wellness - Lisa King, LPC LPC creating digital resources for Religious Trauma, C-PTSD & Third Culture Kids. Healing through self-guided courses & tools. (Not currently accepting clients.)

I am Lisa King, a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) with over 30 years of experience in working with individuals in counseling, mental health and trauma recovery. I specialize in helping individuals navigate Religious Deconstruction, Religious Trauma and Complex Post-Traumatic Stress (C-PTSD). My Background

Growing up as a Third Culture Kid (TCK) in Taiwan, I have a deep passion for the cross-cultural experience and the complexities of identity. My work is rooted in understanding how deep-seated trauma impacts the nervous system and how we can find our way back to wholeness. My Focus

After decades of individual counseling, I have shifted the focus of my practice. I am now dedicated to providing accessible mental health education and digital resources. Instead of one-on-one therapy sessions, I create self-paced tools, PDF guides and online courses to help you on your healing journey. My goal is to offer the resources you need to understand your story and find healing, right where you are.

There’s a quiet truth we rarely talk about —
healing doesn’t mean erasing what hurt 🌾

We don’t wake up one day untouched.
We don’t return to who we were before.
We carry what we lost with us,
not as a weight,
but as a presence.

Grief doesn’t ask to be rushed.
It doesn’t respond to timelines or expectations.
It settles in slowly,
teaching us how to walk with it,
step by step 🚶‍♂️🤍

Some days it’s loud.
Other days it’s barely a whisper.
But it’s always there,
woven into the way we see the world now.

Moving forward isn’t betrayal.
Remembering isn’t weakness.
It’s proof that love mattered —
that something meaningful once existed 🌼

Loss changes us,
but so does love.
They shape us in similar ways:
softening certain edges,
deepening others,
teaching us empathy we didn’t know we needed.

There is no “normal” to return to.
Only a new version of life
that includes what came before
and what remains now 🌿

We learn how to smile again,
even while missing someone.
We learn how to keep going,
even when part of us is still looking back.

And somehow,
both things can be true at the same time.

Walking forward doesn’t mean leaving anyone behind.
It means allowing their impact
to live on inside us —
in the way we love,
in the way we listen,
in the way we hold space for others 🤍

This path may look different than we imagined.
Quieter.
Slower.
More reflective.

But it’s still a path.
And you’re still moving.

Not away from what mattered —
but with it,
carried gently,
every step of the way ✨

Religious trauma doesn’t just live in your beliefs.
It lives in your body.

When fear is preached as faith, when control is framed as love, when God is used as a weapon, your nervous system learns to stay on high alert. That’s the vagus nerve doing exactly what it was designed to do: protect you.

Hypervigilance. Shutdown. Anxiety. Dissociation.
These aren’t spiritual failures. They’re biological responses to chronic threat.

This is why you can leave a harmful theology and still feel unsafe.
Your body remembers what your mind was taught to survive.

Healing religious trauma isn’t just about changing beliefs.
It’s about helping the nervous system learn safety again.

If this resonates, you’re not broken.
You adapted.

One of my goals for 2026 is to finish my book. I have had many doubts while writing this book. It is the story of my life. Sometimes, I ask myself, “Is anybody even gonna care about this book?” And honestly, I know that part doesn’t matter. I am writing this book for me. And even though I have many doubts about myself and whether or not anyone will be helped by my story, I want to remind myself, and I want to remind you, that processing our trauma is not whining. It is refusing to stay stuck in a narrative that was never ours to begin with.

We love to look at people who have left the church and say that now they are “of the world,“ and that they have “lost their way,“ or “they are no longer making Christ a priority in their life.“ Let me tell you…outside of myself, I have talked to many, many people, and that is absolutely not the case.

People have left the church and are leaving the church in droves, because the church/people in the church are unsafe. They desperately desire community. However, they are absolutely done sacrificing themselves to find it.

1. Rest: More Than Stillness

We often mistake rest for mere sleep or physical inactivity. But true, deep rest is an act of intentional silencing. It is the process of quieting the external noise and the internal chatter.

The Physical: Decluttering your environment to create a sanctuary.

The Mental: Allowing thoughts to pass without engaging them.

The Spiritual: Creating a void where you can finally hear your own soul.

Reflection: What space in your life—physical or mental—is begging for a little more breathing room today?

2. Release: The Sacred Shedding

To move forward, we must travel light. Release is the courageous inventory of what no longer serves your highest good. It is the realization that some things were meant to be part of your history, not your destiny. This includes:

Outgrown Mindsets: Beliefs that tell you "you aren't enough."

Stagnant Patterns: Ways of communicating or behaving that keep you small.

Relational Weights: Letting go of people or expectations that drain your light.

Reflection: What are you carrying today out of habit rather than heart?

3. Rise: Reclaiming Your Power

Rising isn’t a loud, aggressive act; it is the steady, unshakable return to your true self. You rise when you stop asking for permission to exist. This is where you:

Find Your Voice: Speaking your truth even if your voice shakes.

Take Back Your Power: Reclaiming the energy you’ve unknowingly scattered among others.

Live Authentically: Stepping into the person you were always meant to be—boldly, beautifully, and unapologetically.

Today’s Affirmation:
"I rest to clear the way. I release to lighten my soul. I rise to meet my truth."

Rest this weekend. Release what is not yours to carry. Rise and continue on your journey.

Treat your mind like you would a very good friend. Take care of it, nurture it, allow it to grow, allow it to expand and learn new things. Most of all, make sure that it gets plenty of water, food and rest.
