Days after giving birth, Erin Adelekun "woke up with the worst headache of her life. The doctor’s office wasn’t open yet, so [her husband Mayowa Adelekun] suggested she rest a little longer while he made her some tea and Nigerian custard. When he called out to say breakfast was ready, Erin tried to answer, but no words came out... Suddenly, her right arm went limp. At that moment, they both realized she was having a stroke."

It was severe, and the future looked uncertain.

After waking up from a coma and relearning how to walk, talk and drive, Erin is on a mission to highlight what's possible in the aftermath of a near-deadly stroke. She shared her story in the Washingtonian, and continues to chronicle her journey and offer hope to fellow survivors and their families via her "Stroke Mama" Instagram.

“Hypertension is the number one preventable risk factor for cardiovascular disease, including heart attack, stroke and heart failure, yet it often goes unnoticed. Patient education is critical and through programs like Target: BP, we’re seeing how care providers can help improve outcomes and address this key driver of heart disease.”
