Last November, our community lost 29-year-old Bre’Asia Johnson to domestic violence. 🪽
Bre’Asia was a devoted mother to her three children, ages 7, 6, and 2, and she was five months pregnant at the time of her death. This week, a man she was previously in a relationship with was arrested and charged with capital murder in connection with her killing.
Her children will now grow up carrying the weight of this loss, and a family is now navigating life without a loved one who should still be here. We are thinking of everyone who loved Bre’Asia as they face unimaginable heartbreak.
What many people don't realize is that women in the United States who are pregnant or who have recently given birth are more likely to be murdered than to die from obstetric causes. Behind that statistic are mothers, babies, and families whose futures are changed forever.
Because of tragedies like this, our team is currently working on research focused on better identifying and supporting women who are pregnant and experiencing, or have previously experienced, abuse. Pregnancy should be a time surrounded by care and protection, not elevated risk of abuse.
If you feel afraid in your relationship, or if something doesn’t feel right, free and confidential support is available.
