Breast Reconstruction Surgery- preparation, procedure and recovery
When you have suffered an injury on one or both the breasts, or you had breast cancer that led to a mastectomy, then you are a good candidate for breast reconstruction. For breast reconstruction, you need to prepare yourself mentally. You have to find a good surgeon to explain you all aspects of the surgery. Make a list of popular cosmetic surgeons in your area and contact them one by one.
Preparing for the surgery
Prior to the surgery, you first need to get some test done. The doctor will evaluate your condition. If needed, he may also give you new medicines. Usually the doctors suggest you not to take medicines with aspirin. He may also suggest you to stop smoking. The surgeon will discuss you with everything including anesthesia, follow-up care and documentation required for verification of implants. You may also need someone to take care of you after surgery for a few days.
You may need to ask several questions about the surgery including where the surgery will take place, medications, bandages to be used, bathing instructions and follow-up care. You also need to ask when you can resume to your normal routine. You also have to wind up your office work as you are suggested to rest after the surgery. You are also not allowed to do any heavy works. Arrange for a helper at your place that can assist you in your household chores. Also take your medicines at the proper time and also take a nutritious diet.
Procedure
Breast reconstruction is a complicated surgery and involves several steps. Before the surgery, you are put under anesthesia. After this, skin and tissues are taken from many places on your body mainly from the abdominal area. The doctors may also use muscle from your back and buttocks to make flaps to cover the implants. Doctors sometimes also use skin expanders that stretch your skin so that implants can fit it over. After this, the implants are fitted and then surgeons use skin grafts to form new ni***es.
Recovery
The incisions made are covered with gauze, to stop bleeding. The surgeon will evaluate you after the surgery, and you will be sent home with a list of instructions you have to follow. You have to take care of your surgical site and have to medications regularly. You may experience swelling at the surgery site that will continue for several weeks.
