Part three of a four-part LGBTQ+ storytelling series featuring local elders, activists, artists, icons and pioneers on lessons learned by Friends of Dorothy Cafe!

Living History: How We Loved: Part 3 of the Living History Series
Moderated by Sarah Marloff, Washington City Paper
Featuring SC Nealy, Rashad A Muhammad, Rayceen Pendarvis, Alberto Ucles & Tom Noll, and Dr. Dorothy Edwards.

In How We Loved, We will hear how q***r and trans people have loved and cared for one another, especially when legal, medical, and social systems did not recognize those relationships. We’ll reflect on chosen family, long-term partnerships before marriage equality, caregiving during the AIDS crisis, hidden romances, friendship as survival, chosen family, and the loves that changed the course of our lives.

This evening is about honoring lived experience, preserving community memory, and strengthening the bridge between generations.

Come listen, learn, and be part of a conversation that connects our past to our future.

Day of Silence was created by a University of Virginia student named Maria Pulzetti. She felt that LGBTQ youth were consistently silenced and ignored by parents and administrators, and that their concerns and complaints were falling on deaf ears. Inspired by this, Maria created the Day of Silence as a one-time event held during the University’s LGBTQ pride week. She believed the day would promote awareness amongst those who might not have been tuned into these issues, by surrounding them with a silence they couldn’t help but notice.

Shame-S*x Attraction: Survivors' Stories of Conversion Therapy by Dr. Lucas Wilson ( ) brings together 17 stories about conversion therapy, written by survivors themselves (including Wilson himself). With a foreword by NYT-best-selling author Garrard Conley and having received praise from a number of reviewers, like those at Publishers Weekly, the book gives voice to a number of LGBTQ+-related themes and experiences, especially in/from high-control religious contexts. As we continue to hear about conversion therapy in the news and on social media, it unfortunately remains a relevant subject to talk about and fight against.
