Let’s chat about the DMV with a Virginia activist as we continue our Black History Month feature on local people of impact!

ABilly Jones-Hennin was a longtime Black q***r activist, writer, and community organizer in the DMV whose work has shaped LGBTQ+ advocacy in Virginia and beyond. Over the past several decades, Jones-Hennin has focused on coalition-building, racial justice, and ensuring that Black LGBTQ+ voices are not sidelined within broader equality movements.

Their leadership reflects the sustained, often invisible labor required to move social change forward—particularly in regions where progress is hard-won and deeply relational.

Adding more folx in March 2026, we're so excited to offer a twice a month in-person support group every other Wednesday evening from 6p - 7p at $35/person per group (Pay-What-You-Can options available for 25% of the group). This is a drop-in, no commitment group, so you're welcome to come once, come every time, or at the pace that works best for you!

This group will be run by our peer support specialist, Liz Hewell Garrett (she/her), a graduate student in Clinical Mental Health Counseling at Marymount University. As the spouse of a trans woman, she is dedicated to fostering inclusive and affirming spaces and is passionate about supporting the LGBTQ+ community. She understands the unique experiences of partners of trans individuals and wants to offer a supportive space for reflection, connection, and growth.

Continuing to celebrate Black History Month by calling attention to local, q***r members of our community who've had an impact on the q***r DMV experience.

Bayard Rustin 3/17/1912-8/24/1987: Bayard was a principal architect of the modern Civil Rights Movement and a master strategist of nonviolent resistance. As the chief organizer of the 1963 March on Washington, Rustin played a pivotal role in shaping one of the most influential demonstrations in U.S. history.

A gay Black man, Rustin was frequently pushed out of public view due to his identity, even as his organizing skills and moral clarity held movements together behind the scenes. His legacy reminds us that progress is often built by those whose names history initially tries to erase.
