"Americans Don't Want Research Cuts. Will Politicians Listen?"
Don't miss this letter to the editor of The Boston Globe from Research!America President and CEO Mary Woolley.

Mary's newly published letter is a response to stark findings from a Boston Globe survey of scientists showing "what is happening to the science and innovation ecosystem in Massachusetts due to an increasingly unstable environment for federally funded research. Massachusetts is not the only state faced with this crisis; the turmoil is affecting communities across the country. But it is not what Americans want."

The Winter Olympics are wrapping up this weekend and people around the world are keeping an eye on the international competition and how countries are faring in the medal count. 🏅

But there's another ongoing international competition. Our recently released 2026 survey found that 9 in 10 Americans say it is important for the U.S. to be a global leader in science and technology. In the same survey, 71.5% of Americans say they are concerned that China could surpass the U.S. as the world's leading S&T power. Ultimately, advocacy that leads to public and private investment, discovery, and innovation is a sure-fire way to ensure that the U.S. remains a global leader.

According to the latest national survey findings from Research!America, 92% of Americans across the political spectrum support basic scientific research. Despite this popular support, the past year has been challenging for U.S. science and research that benefits patients. Half (51%) of Americans say they are informed about canceled federal programs or budget cuts that could impact science, research, and innovation. Of those respondents who said they are informed, 83% say they are concerned about the disruptions to research.

Mary Woolley's latest Weekly Letter opens with Research!America's newly released national survey gauging Americans' views on medical and health research. The survey found a high level of concern among Americans who are aware of the cuts and cancellations made to federally funded research last year. The survey also shows that Americans want a fast-forward approach to medical progress.

Now, we're beginning to turn our attention to FY27 appropriations, and we've provided resources to help you participate in the process. Access these resources, and more, in the Weekly Letter!
