At the Rush Creek Counseling Center, we provide a confidential place to face those struggles with the assistance of a professional counselor. Therapy is tailored to the specific needs of the individual, couple or family. The process of growth and development in every person looks and feels different; therefore we attempt to meet people where they are and incorporate various assignments and techniques with traditional “talk” therapy.

STRESS AWARENESS MONTH: FOCUS FRIDAY

Late-night screen use keeps your brain in alert/reward-seeking mode instead of recovery mode, which means you have a higher stress baseline the next day when stressors inevitably come.

This weekend, try a 30–60 minute screen cutoff before bed.

Instead of scrolling:
-charge your phone somewhere across the room
-dim your lights
-try a low-input activity instead (shower, stretching, reading, journaling)

Set one small boundary and notice what changes.

Gen Z says “touch grass.”
In therapy, we call it grounding.

Take a minute to pause and observe:
5 things you can see
4 you can feel
3 you can hear
2 you can smell
1 you can taste

Or step outside and literally touch the grass 🌿

Simple, but powerful. Your mind and body will thank you.

MENTAL HEALTH MONDAY: The Science of Stress

Play isn’t a break from stress management—it IS stress management!

In children, play lowers cortisol, increases endorphins/dopamine, and strengthens emotional regulation.

Adults default to passive recovery (scrolling, zoning out), which does not have the same effect.

Here's what stress-regulative play can look like for adults:
-Light competition (pickleball, shooting hoops, board games)
-Creative play (doodling, rearranging a room, baking for fun)
-Playful movement (dancing in the kitchen, trampoline with your kids)
-Social laughter (telling jokes, storytelling)

Our professional counselors even employ these forms of play in sessions with adult clients. We also have a counselor who specializes in play therapy for children. We know it works!

This Focus Friday, our counselors are giving you permission to treat yourself. A growing body of research suggests that a little dark chocolate can help with stress management. Over the weekend, enjoy a bite of chocolate. When our office opens again on Monday, take the next scientifically-proven step toward stress management and make an appointment with a counselor at 817-704-6991.

The Thursday before Easter, we find Jesus alone in a garden, sweating under the weight of the world's griefs and sorrows. Centuries earlier, Isaiah foretold a suffering servant would bring peace and healing (Isaiah 53)-- the one he also called a "wonderful counselor" (Isaiah 9.)

Though we cannot carry what He carried, our counselors reflect His heart: to sit with the hurting and point to the hope and healing found in Him.

This Easter, may you find sympathy in the suffering of Jesus and hope in his finished work on the cross.
