This month is Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month! At Opengate, we celebrate the adults we support and the meaningful roles they play in our community every day. For decades, Opengate has helped adults with developmental disabilities live with independence, confidence, and connection. This month and always, we stand for inclusion. Hearing keynote speaker Hoda Kotb (former Today Show co-anchor) and moderator Tara Rosenblum (News 12 Westchester anchor/reporter), and celebrating women business leaders, reminded us of the strength and vision that drive meaningful change. This Black History Month, Opengate honors four Black disability trailblazers and celebrates their leadership, resilience, and their lasting impact on the advancement of accessibility, dignity and inclusion for all. Among the heroes and heroines who transformed policy and opened doors for people living with disabilities:

Johnnie Ann Lacy — Helped establish one of California’s early Centers for Independent Living, and led Community Resources for Independent Living (CRIL).

Imani Barbarin — Contemporary disability justice communicator and advocate amplifying Black disabled voices and policy issues.

Deidre Davis Butler — Lawyer and federal official who used her experience with disability to help draft and implement key 1980s–1990s disability protections (including work around the Americans with Disabilities Act and Air Carrier Access Act).

Lois Curtis — Plaintiff in Olmstead v. L.C. (U.S. Supreme Court, 1999); her case established that unjustified institutionalization can be discrimination under the ADA and helped shift services toward community‑based supports.

The Mission of Opengate, Inc.

Opengate is committed to supporting individuals with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities, including those who are behaviorally challenged, to develop and express their unique potential. Opengate, through its residential, home-based, and day services, assists individuals in making informed choices that enhance their lives through person centered planning, therapeutic and specialized clinical services, and individualized programming.

Underlying Opengate’s purpose and programs is its recognition of the worth and dignity of each individual it serves as a valued member of society. Opengate acknowledges that each person has the right to be treated with respect and fairness. The agency is committed to establishing and maintaining a continuum of services for the developmentally disabled, which include residential, day, home, and community-based services.

Opengate recognizes its moral responsibility for the continuity of care for each resident throughout his/her lifetime. To the extent legally permissible, Opengate exercises the role of advocate for its residents. Opengate assumes guardianship of developmentally disabled individuals to the extent necessary and permitted by law.
