Hand therapy is the art and science of evaluating and treating injuries and conditions of the upper extremity (shoulder, arm, elbow, forearm, wrist and hand). It evolved from the need for a specialist with the knowledge and experience required to manage the challenging recovery of complex hand and upper extremity injuries.

Certified Hand Therapists specialize in treating hand and upper extremity conditions. They work closely with orthopedic and general surgeons who also specialize in the hand to ensure maximal outcomes for patients. Certified Hand Therapists must pass a rigorous certification exam to demonstrate their competency in the practice.

Post-Rehabilitation training is crucial to maintaining and advancing the improvements achieved through therapy, such as mobility, stability and strength. It is not uncommon for an individual to regress in these areas shortly after discharge from therapy; however a Post-Rehab program can be beneficial in keeping that individual on track to achieving their functional goals.
Unfortunately, in today’s healthcare climate, health insurance companies may not fully understand the time and effort required to recover 100% from an injury or condition. Clients have often encountered situations in which their insurance will not cover the later phases of rehab, leaving them vulnerable to unfavorable outcomes. Armonk Physical Therapy & Sports Training understands that shortfall and will always help a client bridge the gap from rehab to their desired goals. In addition, we take pride in our comprehensive return to sport testing, allowing us to objectively determine a client is prepared to return to their respective sport or activity.

Our personal trainers will apply the blueprint set by your Therapist into your training program, keeping in mind the precautions based on your condition, and guiding you along the path to reach your goals. All personal trainers at our facility are credentialed through reputable training associations. Furthermore, our trainers are mentored by our head Therapists to enhance their knowledge and understanding of the human anatomy and how it relates to exercise science throughout a rehabilitation process.

Pelvic floor physical therapy is a specialized branch of PT that focuses on the muscles, ligaments, and connective tissues of the pelvic floor. Pelvic floor physical therapy is often recommended for individuals, both men and women, who experience dysfunction or pain in the pelvic region.

During pelvic floor physical therapy, a trained physical therapist works with the patient to assess the pelvic floor muscles and identify any areas of dysfunction. Treatment plans are tailored to the individual’s needs and may include exercises to strengthen or relax the pelvic floor muscles, proper posture and body mechanics, and strategies for managing symptoms. The goal is to improve the function and coordination of the pelvic floor muscles, alleviate pain, and enhance overall pelvic health.

Hand therapy is the art and science of evaluating and treating injuries and conditions of the upper extremity (shoulder, arm, elbow, forearm, wrist and hand). It uses a number of therapeutic interventions to help return a person to their highest level of function.

Because of changes in the profession, every CHT is required to demonstrate continued professional development and competency by recertifying every five years.

Roxanne Perry OTR, CHT is a licensed Occupational Therapist and Certified Hand Therapist. She has over 20 years of clinical experience treating injuries of the upper extremity. Roxanne has spent a majority of her career working in Manhattan and is fortunate to have worked with many of the top leading hand surgeons. She continues to love what she does and is very happy to be bringing her experience to Armonk Physical Therapy.

What is Pilates at Armonk PT and Sport Training?

Our Pilates program is focused on providing a custom Pilates exercise regime. We use an interdisciplinary approach to support all our clients, patients and athletes and to maximize their potential. We work closely with PT, OT/Hand Therapy, Schroth PT, Pelvic Pain PT and Athletic Training to provide an optimal level of challenge, building ability while respecting our clients’ specific anatomical makeup. We maintain open communication as needed to modify and update our clients’ needs and goals. We can also provide services to new client referrals from outside Armonk PT.

What are some of the benefits of Pilates?

Consistent Pilates training can help improve flexibility, balanced muscle development, posture, skeletal alignment and balance. For the rehab patient, Pilates often helps bridge therapy sessions and return to functional activities and sport. For the athlete, Pilates can provide exposure and training of movements and mobility not regularly accessed in their sport specific training program. Many athletes claim Pilates has significantly added to their quality of movement improving performance and assisting with injury prevention.

The Balance and Falls Prevention Program is an 8-week program with weekly appointments to work individually with a Doctor of Physical Therapy to address limitations that place an individual at risk for falling. A Physical Therapist will perform a thorough evaluation on the first visit and will create an individualized program based on the weaknesses identified.

Upon enrolling in an assessment, you will collaborate with one of our Therapists in the Balance and Fall Prevention Program. Drawing from extensive clinical expertise in addressing individuals with reduced strength, balance, and reaction time, our therapist will conduct a thorough evaluation using a diverse range of tests to pinpoint individual limitations. Subsequently, a tailored treatment plan will be crafted, encompassing gait and balance training, core strengthening, and stabilization exercises. Throughout the program, you will receive personalized attention from our therapists, ensuring continuous adjustments for substantial improvements.

If any of the following is familiar to you or a family member/friend, we strongly recommend scheduling an appointment so we can begin working on reducing your risk for falling:

-Muscles have become weakened over time
-Feeling of unsteadiness when walking or going up/down stairs
-Reduced balance and ability to react to sudden movements
-Dizziness/lightheadedness when transitioning from sitting to standing
-Visual impairments
-Other conditions such as Parkinson’s, osteoporosis, arthritis, stroke, etc
-If you use an assistive device (cane, walker, etc)
-If you have any fear of falling!

This program is covered by Medicare (you will need a prescription from an MD in order for Medicare to cover this service). You will receive one-on-one care each visit from a Doctor of Physical Therapy. The program consists of one visit per week for 8 weeks. Each patient will be given exercises to safely perform on their own in order to continue their progress made here.
