Exciting news for myopia control! We are always exploring new ways to slow myopic (near-sighted) progression throughout childhood. Essilor's Stellest lens is a fascinating new option that hopes to reduce progression by an average of 67%. In the past, we have used various tools including multifocal contacts, bifocal/progressive glasses, and even low dose dilation agents. Stellest is different. It comes in as a single vision option (kids can still accommodate or zoom in/out as normal), but offers peripheral zones that are "defocused" to discourage growth of the length o the eyeball. Sorry to dork out with terminology, but it's fun to have more tools to play with in the search for better vision. Should be available very soon. Stay tuned!

A game-changing innovation in myopia control for children. Learn more about how to slow down myopia.

School is starting to wrap up and it's time for summer fun! The Pikul family is already in baseball/softball season and planning some trips around the US. The summer time is also a great time to teach kids about the fun and responsibility of contact lenses. Some things are just easier to do in contact lenses...roller coasters, swimming, wearing sunglasses, or the improved peripheral vision while driving. We hope to see you soon either way!

Color Blindness: today I learned of a cool setting for iPhones that can be adjusted to help people with color blindness. Color blindness effects about 8% of men and 0.5% of women. Most is a the red/green spectrum. To find the settings...

Allergy eye drops…Eyes itch for a variety of reasons, but allergy sufferers know this too well. Pataday and Lastacaft are some of my go-to drops that are over the counter for treating seasonal allergies. Both are available as a once/day option to get you through allergy season when your oral medications arent getting the job done.

For the kids that may not like drops yet, many liquid oral medications will get you through the symptoms just fine. A cold compress can cool the itch the rest of the way.

We can discuss all of this and more at your next exam. I received some Pataday coupons in my office today if anyone is in need. Spring is almost here!

Low Vision talk!

I actually started my career in "Low Vision." It means even with glasses or contacts you may only correct to 20/70 on the eye chart at best. Patients find it quite frustrating to navigate their daily life when they have experienced vision loss to this level. I’d like to offer a few resources I’ve come across that may be helpful.

Website

Hadleyhelps.org – useful website that discusses different types of common vision loss such as Macular Degeneration. Has videos to go over challenges you or a loved one may face and possible resources

Apps
myScript – large print calculator app
Magnifier – built in app found on Apple devices that turns your smartphone into a magnifying glass and detects objects (sounds like many of us with our camera now)
Seeing AI – essentially a talking camera app that helps patients navigate the world by describing nearby people, text, and objects
Be My Eyes – connects users with volunteers to help via live video (like Facetime with a calm, patient person ready to help on the other side)

Random search bar tool
So I found this while search…my Microsoft Edge browser has a button in the navigation bar with the letter “A” with sound bars coming off. It actually reads to you the words on the page…great for your online browsing.

I hope these resources are a good find for yourself or someone you know. Sometimes learning helps you be more patient with a loved one who may be struggling.
