Raising Adults Tip of the Week 🛒

With our busy schedules, it’s so easy to do things for our kids because it’s faster and simpler in the moment. But when we pause, we start to see how many everyday moments are actually teaching opportunities.

This week’s Raising Adults Tip:
👉 Have your child help with groceries in whatever way fits their age and ability.

In our house, my 5th grader:
✔️ Gets a portion of the list
✔️ Gathers items and navigates aisles
✔️ Compares prices
✔️ Bags and checks out on his own
✔️ Asks store staff for help when needed
✔️ Speaks with the checkout clerk
✔️ Navigates self-checkout independently

It takes a little more time — but it builds confidence, communication skills, problem-solving, and independence.

How do your kids participate in this everyday task to build independence? 💛👇

📞 Raising Adults: The Phone Call Challenge

You may have seen my earlier post about my parenting intention for 2026.
The theme is simple but powerful: we are raising children to become capable, confident adults.

And here’s something I see all the time in my work with teens…

So many teens struggle to make a phone call.
Not because they’re lazy or unwilling — but because it’s a skill they were never taught in our fast-paced, tech-driven 21st-century world.

For many kids, phone calls feel:
• awkward
• too direct
• “over-aggressive” compared to texting

And for others, the anxiety alone is enough to stop them.

But making a phone call is a life skill — one they will absolutely need to be successful adults.

So here’s your challenge 👇
Be a little more old school this week.

📞 Encourage your child to make a phone call to:
• call a friend to make plans
• make a restaurant reservation
• schedule their own doctor’s appointment
• or any reason at all — find one!

No scripts. No rescuing. Just support and encouragement.

Confidence grows through practice — not avoidance.

✨ Parenting Intention for 2026: Raising an Adult ✨

My parenting goal for 2026 is clear: I’m raising an adult.

That means allowing my child the freedom to grow, make mistakes, and make age-appropriate choices — even when it makes me anxious.

Especially when it makes me anxious.

It means noticing the urge to step in, over-explain, or protect… and choosing trust instead. Growth isn’t always comfortable. Independence isn’t always calm. And that’s okay.

My job isn’t to remove every obstacle or prevent every uncomfortable feeling. My job is to be a steady, safe base while my child practices navigating the world. To stay connected without hovering. To lead without controlling. To regulate my own anxiety so it doesn’t become theirs.

Raising an adult means:
• Letting them try before I rescue
• Letting competence grow through experience
• Letting mistakes become teachers, not emergencies
• Letting go — gradually and intentionally

In 2026, I’m choosing long-term confidence over short-term comfort.

Because the goal was never to raise a child who needs me forever.
The goal is to raise an adult who knows they can handle life.

💛

🎄✨ Cherish Holiday Moments ✨🎄

The holidays are full of sparkle, laughter, and… chaos. Between the wrapping, the baking, and the running around, it’s easy to miss the magic happening right in front of us.

Take a moment. Hug a little tighter. Laugh a little louder. Watch their eyes light up when they see the lights. These fleeting moments are the heart of the season. 💛

Breathe. Be here. Treasure the tiny joys—they’re the ones we’ll remember forever. 🌟

Wishing you a season full of warmth, love, and presence.

I often hear this question from parents: How do I know if my child’s anxiety is typical for their age, or if its time to get support?

If you notice any of these patterns in your child, it may be a sign that support could help:

– Struggling to separate from you
– Trouble falling asleep independently
– Refusing or crying about school
– Avoiding social events
– Asking the same questions repeatedly
– Worrying about “what ifs” or making mistakes

If these patterns are affecting daily life, support can help your child build confidence, manage anxiety, and do things independently.

I work with children and teens with anxiety and OCD in Maryland and Wisconsin.

You’re welcome to reach out and schedule a free 15-minute consultation to see how I can support your family.

Hi, I’m Jennifer—founder of KidWise Counseling. I’m a therapist, an educator, and a mom to a big-hearted 10-year-old. I’m also a wife, a dog mom, and a full-time working parent who truly understands what it’s like to juggle so much while raising a family.

After 15 years working with children and families in schools and counseling settings, I created KidWise Counseling as a soft landing place for children who feel everything deeply, and for the parents doing their best to carry it all. Therapy here is real, compassionate, and focused on helping your family feel seen, understood, and supported.

We help;

The parent lying awake at night, wondering if their child’s anxiety is more than just a phase—feeling helpless, heartbroken, and unsure of what to do next.

Families caught in the exhausting cycle of rituals and reassurance, tiptoeing around routines they don’t fully understand but are too afraid to disrupt.

The parent concerned because their child only eats a handful of foods and wondering if this is more than just “picky eating.”

The child with a tender heart and big emotions who feels everything so deeply that they shut down, melt down, lash out, or completely withdraw.

The teen quietly struggling with urges to pull or pick, carefully hiding the signs so others won’t notice.

The child feeling overwhelmed by a move, a loss, a new sibling, or the start of a new school—trying to make sense of big life changes and feeling completely overloaded.

This is a space for healing, hope, and finding your way. You are not alone. We see you, and we’re here to walk beside your family with compassion and care.

If you’re feeling overwhelmed or unsure, reach out. Whether it’s for your child, teen, or yourself, we’re here to listen, support, and guide you every step of the way. Whenever you’re ready,

Contact us for a FREE consult. We can’t wait to hear from you.
