Here’s the biggest one: acne is NOT caused by dirty skin. It’s caused by clogged pores from oil, dead skin cells, and bacteria. Scrubbing harder or washing 5x a day doesn’t help — it makes things worse.
The American Academy of Dermatology recommends benzoyl peroxide, topical retinoids, and salicylic acid as first-line treatments. If OTC options aren’t working after 6–8 weeks, it’s time to talk to a board-certified dermatologist.
