This mom’s baby was struggling to latch, frustrated during nursing, and holding tension throughout her entire body. Mom’s milk supply began to drop because feeding was so difficult.

After her dual wavelength laser-assisted frenectomy procedure at Ashburn Children’s Dentistry, something incredible happened…
✨ Within 20 minutes:
• She opened her mouth wider than ever before
• Her tongue extended naturally
• She latched immediately
• She nursed calmly
• She put herself to sleep

When tethered oral tissues restrict movement, babies compensate — often with full-body tension, inefficient feeding, and disrupted sleep.
When function improves, everything can change.

If your baby:
✔️ Struggles to latch
✔️ Seems tense while feeding
✔️ Falls asleep from exhaustion, not fullness
✔️ Has slow weight gain

You’re not alone — and there may be a functional reason why.
At Ashburn Children’s Dentistry, we use a precise, laser-assisted approach designed to support proper oral function, breathing, and long-term growth.

📩 Send us a message to learn more or schedule a consultation. We’re happy to help!

Most people are told to focus on the latch.
But the latch is only one part of the story.

What many parents don’t realize is that what you don’t know about your baby’s latch today can influence their health for years to come — even into adulthood.

The tongue begins forming just 4 weeks into pregnancy, and it plays a powerful role in how a baby:
• feeds
• breathes
• swallows
• sleeps
• and how the face and airway develop over time

When tongue function is restricted or uncoordinated, babies often compensate in ways that show up as:
• reflux
• gassiness
• colic
• noisy breathing
• prolonged feeds
• maternal ni**le pain

Many families are told these struggles are “normal” or that babies will grow out of them.
But sometimes these early feeding challenges are the body signaling that something deeper needs attention.

On Thursday, March 26 at 5:30 PM EST, we’re hosting a live educational webinar to help parents and birth professionals better understand the early signs of tongue dysfunction and what they may mean for a baby’s development.

Beyond the First Latch
Early Signs of Tongue Dysfunction Every Parent and Birth Professional Should Know
A live educational webinar with:
Dr. Lynda Dean-Duru
Dr. Krystle Dean-Duru

In this session we’ll cover:
• Early feeding signs parents often miss
• How tongue function shapes breathing, sleep, and growth
• When it may be helpful to seek evaluation
• Live Q&A

✨ Open to expectant parents, doulas, midwives, lactation consultants, and anyone working with newborns.
📩 If you’re a doula or lactation consultant, please share this with pregnant clients around 30–36 weeks so families can learn what to look for before baby arrives.

Many parents are surprised to learn that babies are already learning how to rest their lips, tongue, and jaw — and those early patterns influence how they breathe and grow.

At this stage, Myo Munchee is used as a gentle sensory tool to support lip closure and neuromuscular coordination. This early awareness can contribute to calmer breathing, more efficient feeding, and healthier facial development as your child grows.

Small steps taken early can have a lasting impact.

Parents are often told:
“Reflux is normal.”
“Babies just wake a lot.”
“They’ll outgrow feeding struggles.”

Sometimes that’s true.
Sometimes those patterns reflect how feeding, airway development, and sleep are connected.

Tonight, we’re talking about tongue-tie, feeding, and infant sleep with sleep physician Dr. Funke Afolabi-Brown.

Not all sleep problems look like “being tired.”

In children, poor sleep often shows up in surprising ways—like hyperactivity, irritability, difficulty concentrating, or struggling to wake up in the morning.

Sometimes these patterns may be connected to how a child breathes during sleep. Mouth breathing, restless sleep, and nighttime disruptions can affect how restorative sleep truly is.

Because sleep plays a critical role in growth, learning, emotional regulation, and overall health, recognizing early warning signs can help parents take proactive steps.

The goal isn’t to create worry—it’s to create awareness. When parents understand what to look for, they are better equipped to support their child’s long-term well-being.

💬 Have you noticed any of these signs in your child?

When we talk about “Green Light,” we’re not just talking about technology — we’re talking about tissue response.

At the tissue level, the non-surgical laser light helps:
• Gently influence the fascia (the connective tissue under the tongue and lips)
• Support the softening of hyaluronic-acid–rich tissue, which can contribute to relieving stiffness and restriction
• Encourage more comfortable, efficient healing after a release

Fascia isn’t just “extra tissue.” It’s living, responsive connective tissue that adapts to stress, tension, and restriction.

By preparing and supporting the tissue before and after a frenectomy, we can approach releases more conservatively — especially for infants but also for our kiddos, teens, and adults!

Less force. More support. Better healing.

“Don’t wait for problems to get louder. Listen when they whisper.”

In infants, the “whispers” can look like:
• Difficulty latching
• Clicking while nursing
• Gassiness or reflux
• Prolonged feedings
• Poor weight gain
• Tension in the body
• Shallow breathing patterns

Sometimes these signs are related to tongue ties or lip ties that restrict proper oral function.

At Ashburn Children’s Dentistry, we believe prevention begins in infancy. We evaluate structure, function, breathing, and growth — because how a baby feeds and breathes today can influence their development tomorrow.

If something feels off, trust your instinct. Message us to schedule an infant airway and oral function evaluation. Early assessment makes all the difference.

Parents — have you ever wondered:
Why does my child still struggle with sleep even after braces?
Why does straightening teeth not always fix breathing?
Why do some treatments fail to create lasting change?

We had the honor of joining If Your Mouth Could Talk with Dr. Bahar Esmaili to talk about what mainstream dentistry often overlooks:
✨ Airway development
✨ Nervous system regulation
✨ Birth trauma & fascia
✨ Whole-body readiness before orthodontics

Because healthy kids are built from the inside out — and the mouth is just one piece of the story.
If you’re ready to see your child’s health through a new lens, this conversation is for you.
